confused Any ETA for new Beta WUs?

Sorry to break the spell and disturb the silence here (just kidding love struck ), but is anyone aware of any Beta coming our way any time soon? It's just that it's been a while since the HCC GPU tests and I would really love to at least double my current Beta contribution, proudly standing now at 3 DAYS hypnotized .

Cheers!

Edit: wrong number of days.

Re: Any ETA for new Beta WUs?

No one is aware what's coming except the techs. If by the off chance a CA would have been slipped the knowledge, they'd be mum still.

Till then, revert to jhindo posts on new projects general statement. Of course science app fixes always come out of the blue as do performance enhancement tests. Neither has an indication on the forums as there being a problem [except maybe those who have an NVIDIA card and suffer lag, not using default settings i.e. by choice... that problem will be self-resolving shortly ;>)

Well, where's been more than one post about XYZ under Linux is much faster than under windows, and this points to a problem with the windows-build of XYZ and this problem should preferably be fixed ASAP.

Appart for speed-problems, where's also the continuing problem with CEP2's many tiny files killing performance. Unzipping 6466 mostly tiny files for every wu is a very inefficient method to use. Now, with some "bleeding"-edge games like DOOM, the files is also zipped. But, instead of unzipping all the files, they've kept in the zip-file, and accessed directly from the zip-file.

So, a nice fix would be to change CEP2 to do the same, access the files directly from the zip-file without needing to extract them to disk.

Since DOOM will have it's 20-year-anniversary later this year, it's not like this is "new" technology...

To translate for you what I said [speak no Bokmål though]: There's nothing pressing, except in your book of course ;>). If you can find compiler libs for Windows that XYZ [speak VINA or integer intense scvience] make run faster, do speak up ;>)

CEP2 we were already told that a new science app is in development based on a new Q-Chem engine, old news thus.

Sekerob: "If you can find compiler libs for Windows that XYZ [speak VINA or integer intense scvience] make run faster, do speak up ;>)"

Think I suggested one such in the CEP2 forum here : Intel(R) Math Kernel Library (Intel(R) MKL)
If I read things correctly the docs suggest that it can be configured to automatically select at run-time the best instructions to use for a particular CPU. Also optimises AMDs.

CEP2 scientist cleanenergy replied that CEP2 already "uses optimized libraries such as MKL or ATLAS, but for use on the World Community Grid we have to compromise a lot because we cannot tailor the executable for every host hardware." ATLAS can be found at http://math-atlas.sourceforge.net/

Re: Any ETA for new Beta WUs?

Thank you for presenting the case.

1) Best libraries are being used (uplinger laid already out one time what's being chosen from in quantitive terms)
2) Compiling with optimizations down to the CPU type / family is not viable (A support nightmare and scientists nightmare on the in and output side.)

My question still stands thus.

Re: Any ETA for new Beta WUs?

i would hope more projects would be coming out soon... but right now i am guessing they are concentrating on making sure the projects that are ending get finished up properly .. so i would not expect anything before GFAM and HPF clear up and end. but we can always hope

Re: Any ETA for new Beta WUs?

If you read the latest news here http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewNewsArticle.do?articleId=302 then there should be a beta for a new project with Ontario Cancer Institute soon(ish).

It seems unlikely this will be before GFAM and HPF are wrapped up, but only the WCG techs would be able to offer any ideas of timelines.
