Hi! I am building a new computer with dual Radeon HD7970 an wondering which CPU I should chose, AMD FX-8350 or Intel i7 3770K, if my goal is to crunch as much work units as possible?
I'm mainly running GPU work units in 'Help Conquer Cancer' and 'POEM' |

Hi Simplex,
----------------------------------------I don't know which one is better, but if you take decision to go with Intel, I would recommend to buy i7-3770 without "K" - lot of projects do not like overclocked CPU's and GPU's, so I think buying overclockable CPU may be wasting of money, which you can invest into some other HW Cheers ![]() ![]() Crunching@Home since January 13 2000. There are some projects that do better when you don't over clock but most projects do not have a problem with overclocking. 3770k is a far better option IMHO. ( FWIW I run my CPUs and GPUs overclocked here)

Hi,
I would buy the Intel i7 3770 K and overclock it to "feed" both Radeon HD7970 properly with data. |

Personally speaking I think AMD are far better value for money!
----------------------------------------And they work really well, just look at my stats, I only run AMD FX8120's/3.1Ghz & FX8350's/4Ghz with HD7770 & HD7850 Some GPU's are paired with Crossfire and work well, a couple of machines are overclocked a little, all the GPU's are o/c'd AMD Every time for ME! Edit - Added CPU Speed

Thank you nanoprobe & hajko2. I gues that I should take your answers as that FX-8350 would not be capable to feed 2 HD7970 as good as an i7 3770.

At the risk of overstating the obvious, your intent to help with HCC is very much appreciated, but the GPU portion is about to come to an end. POEM is, of course, an good alternate, but you may want to ask about best hardware practices over on their forums .....

Edit - Added CPU Speed I would always buy Intel, because I have to look at my electricity consumption. Intel has very low TDP, AMD doesn't care about it... And on the top of it, Intel's CPU's are doing great job. Cheers ![]() ![]() Crunching@Home since January 13 2000. Shrubbing@Home since January 5 2006 ![]() |

Maybe you can overclock CPUs some (though I don't), but I would avoid overclocking GPUs. The difficulty of the work units differ in most projects, and also the temperature and who-knows-what else on your card will vary. You will wake up one morning (or worse, come back from a trip) to find out that your PC is seized up, and you will have lost far more work than you can gain.
I don't even like factory overclocked cards, having had to adjust either the clock rate down or the voltage up to get them stable, but sometimes they can't readily be avoided to get what you want. |
