Hello fourm! This is my first day using these forums to ask for help or clarification on the BOINC agent, thanks in advance for your warm welcome!
I have 2 installations Win XP PC - 32 bit - Running "Help Conquer Cancer... " Win 7 PC - 64 bit - Running "FightAIDS@Home..." The first installation only has 2 active tasks at a time. The second installation (64 bit Win 7) I just installed today started out with 8 active tasks. Does the project determine the number of active tasks or can I as the user set that? Is the capability of my system taken into account in setting the number of active tasks allowed? If it is a user controlled setting is it set per project, per installation/computer or some other way? I I have searched the options and preferences, this forum, the general internet and read much of the help text (this last of which I have found to be as usual grossly oversimplified) and not found much. There was one mention in the Device Profile when signed in to WCG online that asked "number of workunits per host for the Clean Energy Project - Phase 2" however as noted above I am not contributing to that project at this time. (just in case I changed this value from 1 to 5 and then communicated with the server from that device and there was no change). Any clarification you can give would be helpful. |

Hi,
1) The client detects how many threads a computer can run, usually referred to as CPU cores or processor threads. Your 8 is likely a 4 core processor with hyperthreading enabled to make it 8. 2) The number of concurrent processes run by BOINC can be reduced by changing the % of Processor option. The option's description is exactly "On multiprocessor systems, use at most 100% of the processors. That simple ;>) |

P.S, There's also the Start Here FAQ forum and the BOINC Wiki's ... a rather distributed set of DIY resources.

Neat thank you! Seems obvious now that you say it, and I suspected it had to do with detecting something about the capabilities of my new computer. Sometimes those obvious things are the most puzzling to someone new because no one spells it out.
How does one add to the FAQ? Most items listed under there are problems rather than describing normal operation. |

Hello burkhart77,
How does one add to the FAQ? Most items listed under there are problems rather than describing normal operation. Right now I do not know of a current wiki about BOINC or WCG. SekeRob posts answers to frequent problems in Start Here which is a forum with restricted write-permission.Lawrence |
