Re: New machine build, Which Linux software is best?

I useLinux Mint 14 Cinnamon 64 bits. I feel that it is more lightweight than Ubuntu.
Whichever Linux OS you choose, use a 64 bit version. The VINA sciences(DSFL, GFAM and SN2S) for example, run much faster(60% or so) in Linux 64 bits than in Windows 7 64 bits.

Check this thread for the VINA sciences discovery by SekeRob.

Re: New machine build, Which Linux software is best?

Many thanks Falconet, I'll deffinately use the 64bit version to get the best out of the machine and OS.

I guess I'll be back for some guidance...

I also have used several Linuxmint versions. Latest is Linuxmint 14 -64 bit. Easy to install and rock solid except for wireless communication which seems to have stabilized with the latest update. Never any problems with the wired (ethernet) configuration.
Cheers

Re: New machine build, Which Linux software is best?

Stumbled on an alternate to Mint Ubuntu based, which was I think Called Linux Mint Debian Edition aka LMDE... quick re-google: http://www.zdnet.com/a-look-at-linux-mint-deb...n-lmde-201303-7000013027/

Happy with what I have... just Ubu 13.04 at the moment.

Re: New machine build, Which Linux software is best?

There are lots of great Linux choices.

I use 64-bit Xubuntu. It's lighter weight than regular Ubuntu, but gives you access to all the Ubuntu software repositories. I happen to like the Xubuntu user interface (XFCE) much better than Ubuntu Unity, but that's just my personal taste.

I use Slackware 14.0 x86_64 with 32 multilib installed. peace
I don't have a GPU configured on that box, it just munches on CPU goodies. biggrin
It's also my home DNS, FTP, HTTP, DHCP, and Samba server.

SekeRob
2 threads, well it could be efficiency, absent minded or just plain didn't know where to put it for best response...

I'm still new here and getting used to what goes where...
