confused How do I add a user to a group in Mac OS 10.6?

When I start the BOINC Manager in Mac OS 10.6, I get an error message telling me (the administrator) to add myself (the non-administrative account that I use to browse the Internet) to the "boinc_master" user group. How, exactly, do I do this? Or, must I leave my computer's administrator account logged in continuously in order to run BOINC?

Hi,

If what you're asking is not covered here:

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Tools_for_Mac_OS_X

then you'll have to wait for another OS-X user to help you along.

edit (simply, I've no clue, but to google for the answer).

Yes, as it is stated in the document "Tools", installer asks whether or not you wish to add all non-admin users to group boinc_master. So the easiest way is to install BOINC again (I recommend to go with version 7.0.31) and check this possibility smile .

Cheers peace

confused Re: How do I add a user to a group in Mac OS 10.6?

Adding a user to a group should be easy; it's just that I don't know how. Reinstalling the product or downloading new software (my computer has no AddRemoveUser command, so I'd have to download and install it) seems a bit overkill for what should be a routine administrative task. After all, the error message says that all you have to do is "contact" the "administrator," as if adding a user to a group was completely trivial.

OS-X is only as user friendly as not having to go beyond the GUI ;>)

Me not know either, but Google beyond a doubt does most anything by leeching off the intertubes. Here's one discussing how to do this (but I'm guessing for you're on 10.6 and this seems to be written for a later version): http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20100609140550467

I will try it... I saw that as one of my search results but I wanted to check here first, to be sure that I wouldn't mess up the science. Thanks for the support smile

Re: How do I add a user to a group in Mac OS 10.6?

Looks like the "Users and Groups" in System Preferences appears in 10.7 non-server. So for 10.6 you'll have to modify groups the old school way via command line.

I found this interesting bit of info:

"As of BOINC Version 6.10.5, BOINC Manager no longer runs setgid to group boinc_master, because Mac OS 10.6 does not allow it. So it can be run only by users who are members of group boinc_master. By default, the BOINC installer automatically adds all users who are members of group admin to group boinc_master, and optionally adds non-admin users to group boinc_master. ..."

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/sandbox.php

As suggested already, probably just easier to uninstall and reinstall BOINC to set the group membership correct. I've done it in the past, doesn't take long.

Re: How do I add a user to a group in Mac OS 10.6?

Okay, I used the dseditgroup command as described in this article, but when I type

dseditgroup -o edit -u jdl -p -a (the name of the nonadministrative user) -t user boinc_master

it returns the error "Group not found." (The really interesting thing is that it also returns this exact same error even if I mistype the administrative password!)
What did I do wrong?

documentation/error message outdated?

I should also mention that I have BOINC Manager 6.10.58 for Macintosh, and that I recently upgraded from Mac OS 10.4.11 to Mac OS 10.6.8.
Maybe BOINC 6.10.58 does not have a "boinc_master" group? confused If that is the case, then the error message would seem to be incorrect; how else might I resolve the problem without having to uninstall and reinstall? Maybe I should add the non-administrative user to a different group?

Re: documentation/error message outdated?

To see if group "boinc_master" and "boinc_project" are there:

dscl . list /Groups | grep boinc

Alternate method (article has OS 10.5 but can be used for later versions):
