Hi ConsPect,
----------------------------------------As far as I know, there is no fix for this. The only thing you can do is to either set the WUs not to be crunched while the computer is in use or set exclusive GPU apps in your xml config file so that the GPU WUs are paused when you are watching a movie or playing a game, for example. There are several threads already opened on this, you may as well start with the GPU support forum. By the way, I have the same graphics card. Hope this helps. Cheers! Knowledge is limited. The only fix is to buy something like a Radeon HD 7950. 7000 series are GPGPU computing monsters. It makes no difference whether I run 8 threads or 16 threads, no lag at all.

Set the "Do work on my graphics card while computer is in use?" preference to "No" and specify an idle timeout for it to restart. For activities where you need the GPU long-term without active input with the computer (Netflix, etc) I will manually "Snooze GPU" from the BOINC manager.

... or use in the example <explusive_app>netflix.exe</exclusive_app> in the cc_config.xml <options> section to pause BOINC automatically long as your more important program is loaded. The parm has to be the exact program name mask [caps sensitive], as shown in the task/process manager.

Another option which I use on a PC that both crunches and works as a PVR is to use a second GPU that is no use for GPU crunching but good enough for multimedia purposes.
----------------------------------------This method relies on your motherboard being able to to take at least two GPUs. With the two cards installed, you tell BOINC to exclude the older card (which will be devoted to displaying graphics and movies etc). By making the older card the primary device, you can successfully crunch with no lag and also play media with no lag on the older card. I think this method has been overlooked because it is usually wiser to have the most powerful card as the primary device but by doing it this way, you can easily get your desired outcome. If you are thinking about doing this, take a look at the thread that discusses 'GPUs that cannot be used for GPU crunching' any of these cards will usually be OK for using my method. If you have one of these already, go ahead and give it a try. You may well be surprised! Crunching in memory of my Mum PEGGY, cousin ROPPA and Aunt AUDREY. |
