Portable software

I would like to participate in WCG projects. But, due to restricted user's account at my computer, it isn't possible to install software.

Is there any way to run BOINC agent portably?

I copied already installed files (from c:\Program Files (x86)\BOINC\ and c:\ProgramData\BOINC\) to the flash drive and plug it into another PC. But, then, unfortunately, agent didn't run correctly.

Re: Portable software

Hi,

There's solutions that run entirely off a memory-stick / flash drive, usually Linux. Of course the question has to be asked is if the device in which you plug the USB stick can be made to boot from [My laptop just requires an escape at POST and then identifies what drives there are to boot from]. And of course, booting to Linux makes anything you run under Windows inoperable.

Re: Portable software

Hi,

Just install this onto a USB drive and run it every time you boot up.
No need for the portable apps software.

I have been using this guys version for ages and it works pretty well for me.
You can install in on a USB and run it from there too.

Re: Portable software

Interesting, by someone from Rechenkraft. Unpacked it to see content [version], suspecting it's 6.10.18. At any rate it's from 2009, so don't expect support of all the latest greatest sciences, particularly crunching on GPU will possibly be problematic [not likely to work for WCG HCC-GPU with it's OpenCL requirements]. Let us know the good/bad/ugly, and might add a reference in the SH FAQ's, but, lets remain street legal... don't fry your employer's computer ;O)

Re: Portable software

Thanks to you all.
I'm going to use Intel-based computers. Unfortunately, latest versions of BOINC software aren't support Intel GPUs. Comparing with older versions, it doesn't give option in this way.

I will give my opinions here after couple of days testing.
