Perhaps, this has been dealt with before, but I couldn't find it.
----------------------------------------The error I get is "Boinc couldn't do internet communication, and no default connection is selected. Please connect to the internet, or select a default connection using advanced/options/connection." I have two computers at work on which I am running Boinc/wcg. Computer B is the problem machine. The "fix" is to simply go to computer B, open up IE, go to any web page (e.g., google) (I even think that our intranet page might be sufficient), then click "Retry Now" in the "Transfers" tab of boinc. edit: I don't use this computer too often, so if I forget to manually send results, they may sit there for days & days. Computer A, I don't have this problem, I figure, because I frequently access the internet on this machine. Therefore, whenever it's ready to send results/receive projects the lines of interent communication are flowing freely. Here's the deal, I'm not a super techy guy, so your suggestions can't be that convoluted or else I won't be able to understand them. Further, since these are work computers I don't want to be messing around too much with the settings. I hope that makes sense. --- edit: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3 [Edit 3 times, last edit by 1695814 at Feb 6, 2013 12:30:47 AM] |

Microsoft Windows XP
----------------------------------------Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3 I also added a note about computer B: I don't use this computer too often, so if I forget to manually send results, they may sit there for days & days. [Edit 2 times, last edit by 1695814 at Feb 6, 2013 12:31:18 AM] |

I do not know of a setting in XP that would cause the internet connection to "go to sleep" so to speak. It might be something your company has configured. However, I might have a workaround. I do not know if it will work or not. Open up your browser and go to a site which continuously updates like http://www.time.gov/ for instance. (You need to have java enabled and to click on a time zone). Minimize the browser. Since the browser is continuously updating your connection should stay open. Good luck.

1695814,
The Sgt. is on the right track me thinketh. Check your connect configuration Ethernet or WIFI and switch off power management. Here's 2 quick Google hits: WIFI: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/30702-18-...-power-management-setting Ethernet/Wired: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837058 |

Cheers It seems your suggestion is working. FWIW, I had to go to http://time.gov/widget.html since, with the original suggestion, I got the message "Possible browser java error or a firewall stops the time applet." Thanks for your help. ### |

Check your connect configuration Ethernet or WIFI and switch off power management. (1) That sounds really complicated for a simple guy like me. (2) It's on a corporte network, so they probably don't want me messing with those settings anyway. Thanks for the ideas, though. Also would check Boinc preferances, network, and set to always on Yes, that is set up correctly. Thanks.[Edit 1 times, last edit by 1695814 at Feb 7, 2013 6:22:03 PM] |

It was the alternate to constantly running a web browser that does a "keep alive" loading your corporate network ;>). Corporate machine(?)... trust you confirmed it's alright to have BOINC running... one of these "let's not do that and give WCG a bad rap, when the Alien Nation searchers already had their comeuppance when this school IT administrator was doing BOINC without board approval... he got fired". We like all company machines to be legally connected... with the chiefs blessing if policy so dictates, and what's not mine always requires the OK anyhow [no intend to lecture, but it does get forgotten in the hunt for more crunching].
If your Company machine has Vista/W7/W8, it's quite simple, on Linux Ubuntu even simpler]. Assuming W7, 1) Rightclick the WIFI icon on systray and select "Open network and Sharing center" 2) In the new window click on the connection link which opens up properties. 3) Hit Properties, left bottom 4) In new Network Properties screen choose Configure button. 5) The next screen opened should have a Power Management tab, where the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" has to be unticked. This will actually increase transmission speed, and in the case of Linux [command: sudo iwconfig wlan0 power off ] prevents even for tasks to crash when BOINC can't find the internet connection is live... no back-off check like you get messages for. Anyway, if the keep alive works, don't change. |

I understand your concerns & appreciate you sharing them. In my view, everything in that regard is copacetic. If your Company machine has Vista/W7/W8, it's quite simple, on Linux Ubuntu even simpler... criminy, we're still on XP. Regardless, thanks for your insight & input. |
