The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2, crashes in Windows 8

I use Windows 8 With AMD Radeon HD 7950. I have disabled GPU folding, still my computer has rebooted twice for no reason, until I checked the MEMORY.DMP file:

It seems like there is a problem With the Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 and the AMD Radeon HD GPU drivers, or am I wrong? And why does it even conflict when GPU is disabled in BOINC client?

Re: The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2, crashes in Windows 8

Hi,

Actually CEP2 has nothing at all to do with GPGPU, it only uses CPU and system RAM, and lots of disk. I've run many CEP2 on my W8-64 4 GB RAM system, at hi efficiency at that, though the Video card steals so much of that, the effective available RAM to BOINC for crunching is just 2.7 GB.

Anyway, to start understanding your setup, please post the startup messages of BOINC, first 35 lines. Anything else we need to know such as other sciences run on the side, or is this an "All CEP2" condition?

Re: The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2, crashes in Windows 8

Looks like the specs are a whole bunch of more than enough :D. Have you restricted CEP2 in some way, like stuck to default of 1 at a time allowed on the host?

The log indicates you also have a problem with HPF2, and the high memory address dump might be pointing to a need to do a memtest86 or similar to see if there's some hardware issue [Sorry, but we know all about "rock solid" when the hardest hardware test is actually crunching WCG, and CEP2 reaching into the higher RAM address ranges.]

The config file I'd not worry about. The defaults are just fine.

Re: The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2, crashes in Windows 8

P.S. Suggest you upgrade BOINC to 7.0.45 [64 bit] since you have an alpha client anyhow. There's a bunch of improvements in the latest test client. Noted that you installed BOINC at user level, surely to be able to do GPGPU computing.

To download 7.0.45, simply change the 7.0.36 download address with the .36 part changed to .45

I ran memtest86 and it passed with no errors:

Re: The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2, crashes in Windows 8

I have found that even if the hard drives test fine, that they sometimes can't handle even one CEP2. I have seen this in multiple systems and have just excluded them from running it. Those machines were running cheap Hitachi hard drives. I confirmed that on each of those cases by cloning the drive to a different brand and the troubles went away.

If HPF2 is having trouble, check to see if it is happening at the same time as CEP2 crashing. Some systems don't like HPF2 as well.

As suggested above, try limiting the number of CEP2 that run at a time. I recommend only 1. Also, you may want to exclude HPF2 to see if that helps too and vice versa to see if there was a correlation.
