Protected data [Resolved]

I provide a weekly Status Report for my team. Until this week, I could just grab the desired data off the browser's webpage, copy it <ctrl-c>, then directly special paste it into my OpenDocument Spreadsheet.

Now, however, if I do that, the application takes forever to write the data and opening the spreadsheet again takes just as long. Maybe five minutes. There is a string of characters that appear in red in the unused columns that look like a URL address, but it is overlaying itself in such a way that I can't truly read it. If I had to guess, I'd say it was the webpage address...
https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/vi...amp;numRecordsPerPage=100

I know the data is Protected, but it was protected before this week and I never had any problem with it. I have no desire to change your numbers, only use the data to provide a display of Points and Results gain for the week for each member of the team. I've developed a workaround of copying the webpage to my Desktop then grabbing the data from there. That seems to circumvent to delay factor.

I can live with that workaround, but I ask you is this an intended effect of your "upgrade" last Tuesday or is there a potential problem like a virus? Please say it ain't so.

Sincerely,
Gandalf

Re: Protected data

This took about 5 seconds to copy and paste, which when I copied it to an Excel spreadsheet generated a 9 column list [9, because each column has a tab space in between]. Open Office, just not up to snuff in my book [but that's just because of what I want out of a spreadsheet program that OO is not providing]. Try right click in the target cell, then a list will appear [not sure of OO/LO]. Excel offers a paste special option called "Paste and keep text only" and a "Unicode text". This is instantaneous, retaining the proper column format. A direct paste, well it took minutes here too, using your link. It's when you paste with Ctrl-V, you're creating 84 hyperhotlinks in your sheet and that takes time, in Excel too.

Re: Protected data

P.S. Don't know if those hyperlinked member names were always there or if it's something new. As for "protected"... there's nothing protected about this data, as noted, just the hyperlink pasting generating live-links in your spreadsheet which is taking time.

I never us <ctrl-v> with this protocol to paste. Technically, it's <Ctrl+Shift+V>.
After the paste special starts a window opens and I select the HTML I think.

Like I said, my procedure worked fine until this week.

Re: Protected data

Whatever changed [I never do this, nor tried to use the xml? or csv export [see uplinger website update announcement], offered you a workaround. The data is and was never protected.

@ Gandalf_the_Grey

I also produce data reports for my team (UK). In Excel I use copy and paste and then right click to establish a "refreshable web query". Works just fine and there's been no change before/after this week's updates. I've sent a simple worksheet for your team with 2 data queries set up to import the basic data by member and by project. and sent it to the address in your profile. Hope it gives you some ideas. wink

Personally I'd find it useful if WCG data were available in CSV format, as with this weeks change to Project stats, but I think that's too much to expect. wink

Thanks for the sample of your work. I hope you got mine.

I think I figured out the problem....Firefox.

I did the same procedure using IE and using Firefox. Working on a Win7 system, I had no problem with IE, even though I do not use it on a daily basis. Using Firefox stopped me in my tracts. The 5 minute delay was back. With Firefox, I have save a copy of the webpage to my Desktop in order to avoid the delay factor.

That is the best I can figure out.

Re: Protected data

I tried your method of the simple copy and paste using the free spreadsheet gnumeric and using firefox. It pasted almost instantaneously with everything in the proper columns and the hyperlinks for the names intact. Maybe this will work for you.
Cheers

Re: Protected data

Ctrl-V versus Ctrl-Shift-V according Lifehacker http://lifehacker.com/5639828/google-chrome-n...s-built+in-text-stripping is supposed to strip the text attributes during pasting. Does nothing on my Excel [no pasting at all, not in their manual but for Ctrl-V/Ctrl-Alt-V, to bring up the paste special manual]. Works fine in Wordpad though.

Trick for Firefox is [did this Ctrl-Shft-V change happen upgrading to 18.01 that came out as a security fix release last week?]. Hold the Ctrl Key, then with mouse select single column or multiple columns of data.

Querying with Excel from WCG stats pages I've been doing for a long time [all the stats graphs build on them], but the setup I do quite different to jonnieb, via the Data menu selecting "From Web", pasting the address from the browser, update [Go], then pick the areas that I wish to fetch/refresh each time running the query update macro [selected yellow arrows turn green]. Convenient, no messing with xml, csv, or anything.

I have the 18.0.1 version. I think that that is what you meant. confused
