No, not the computer users who worship you because you help them with their computer problems.
----------------------------------------Come, come, no need to be modest. ![]() I mean cooling fans. I can normally tune out the noise and really, the newer ones are really pretty quiet until you start talking about the really high volume/velocity models. But right now, i'm sitting with my precious ear drums about 4 feet away from an open test bench with 2 intel cpu FHS (fan/heat sink) combos and I swear to Xenu that these things were specifically designed to grate on my very last nerve like an abrasive cutting wheel. First is the fact that that they're controlled by the motherboard so the rpm's naturally go up and down with the load. So instead of a relatively constant whine, I get an already annoying whine that is constantly changing in pitch. Now add to that the fact that there are 2 of them since it's a 2P board and you get these very fine changes between the pitches that sometimes amplify and sometimes seem to create this . . . IDK how to describe it except to call it a shuddering sound. Needless to say this puppy is getting relocated. Except these fans were originally in the 2P hex core rig I took the chips from and that one was in a spare room next to my bed room and I could hear them even from there. It was far enough away that I didn't really care and could ignore it, at this point, I don't care. These coolers are garbage. I'm replacing them before I move this rig back to where I had the original 2P hex rig and where it's sibling still resides. You know, if they don't take me away in a straight jacket before then - but I've evaded them so far, hehehe. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by twilyth at Jan 26, 2013 3:38:08 AM] |

Cooling-fans for liquid-cooling setups are generally quieter than their air-cooling setups' counterparts. If cooling is the main concern, with liquid-cooling, one gets better heat-extraction with a quieter fan thrown in as a bonus. If cooling is the main star of the show, short of liquid-helium cooling, you may want to explore peltier-cooling. As always, there is no free lunch in liquid-cooling nor in peltier-cooling, never mind liquid-helium cooling. Are you with me in cooling yet? Then go at your own cost -- water-cooling PC with Peltier . Else, nanoprobe's suggestion of headphones and music should sound perfect for your ears -- literally and figuratively.

Thank you, but I'm mostly an air cooling person since I don't generally do much overclocking. Even on the rigs I do, I tend to go for out-of-the-box solutions rather than anything I have to build myself. Those sorts of projects just never seem to work out for me and I have enough other things going on to aggravate me that I'm not anxious to add to the list.
----------------------------------------Anyway, a pair of these have already been shipped according to amazon. ![]() Supposedly the noise level is 13dba. That seems unlikely, but I'm sure the little screamers I've got now are over 50. ![]() ![]() |

Most annoying in my menangerie is the Apple Power Mac G4 MDD, also known as the "Windtunnel G4" .
----------------------------------------To quote wikipedia: "Noise complaints became such a problem that Apple later replaced the machine's power supply (PSU) and primary cooling fan with quieter versions, and initiated a voluntary do-it-yourself (DIY) replacement scheme for all previously sold machines." Except that mine didn't get the upgrades and is as noisy as a Possum in a meat grinder. Second most annoying fan noise comes from my Sun microsystems Sunblade1500, but thats OK, because old Unix stuff is cool . ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Delta 80mm fan that is all I had to cool NB on a board is my least favourite.
----------------------------------------I have some big old Delta server fans that cannot run full speed for fear of permanent hearing damage but the good surprise from them is that running two in series produces a audible but acceptable tone for me. Trying to do the same using a fan controller makes a horrible motor noise and produces harmonics too that do nothing but grate on the nervous system. You will probably not need to run two fans on each of the hypers if the cpu's are running stock ![]() |

So, there's bound to be some noise... inevitably, from cooling fans included. I wonder why noise-cancellation technology didn't seem to come to the fore as a solution...

The only annoying fan is not *in* any computer but in an, what some would term, *aftermarket* external laptop power-supply made by Hama. When it gets warm, the internal fan is not running fluid anymore and the housing starts to resonate on that. The old bang on the TV method, in this case, knocking it to the carpet stops it for a while. Fortunately, it's only ever on a few hours a week... 32 bits OS to run legacy software that wont run on 64 bit OSses, not even in compatibility modes.

Fixed it!
I turned off my computer last night in frustration. This afternoon I banged on the right spot so I am back on the internet with my normal slight hum. (Actually, slightly higher pitch. Oh well.) This can happen when I am working on my motherboard. I have decided (force majeure, but I will put a dignified face on it) not to use a GPU until I get another motherboard. Lawrence |
