Do not send Opt-in WUs if no work is available

The Clean Energy Project is an Opt-in due to system requirements.
I have Say No to Schistosoma as my single selected project, and I have the "send me work from another project" option ticked.

Because Schistosoma project had no WUs available, WCG server sent me a Clean Energy Poject WU, without consideration whether my machine can handle it. thus ignoring the Opt-in issue all together.

Suggestion:
When no work is available for selected project(s), do not send work from:
1) Opt-in projects if they are not selected.
2) New projects, if that option is not selected. We can define new as three months for example.

I second the motion.

Yup,

Because of this problem I am unable to ever check the "if no work..." box.

Re: Do not send Opt-in WUs if no work is available

Whilst getting an option to *not* get a specific science when "if no work..." kicks in is logical, there's nothing to motion when it's FAIK already moved to "what to develop", till then a little trick could get you all going for lesser devices... Set the memory or disk space allowed to BOINC below the minimum of CEP2. For the disk side it's 2GB, for memory the actual check is lower than what's on the system requirements page... thinks it's 750MB. The disk limiter is in my estimation the better way of the 2 fetch restrictors being checked. I've got 7 Clean Water running and 1 CEP2 and that takes 1.89GB of disk space use. The Clean Water are rather memory hungry, so that excludes the RAM restriction as an option, but I'll try the disk setting to see if that stops CEP2 coming when set to 1.9GB Disk use max (now it aint possible as getting a "no work available for... CEP2" :O

Of course, when CEP2 is set to it's default in the profile to *no*, and the number further down to only have 1 on a host at any time, there wont be more fetched and processed, not the biggest disaster.

Whilst, the brilliance of app_config.xml kicks in of client 7.0.42 and up, specially made for all and many. I've got cep2 specified for my laptop octo as <max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent> and caching 8 [2 day cache], so there's always a new one taking the slot of the CEP2 task finishing... they're always oldest in the FIFO queue to be asked if allowed to start. (advertisement for promoting more CEP2 participation ;o).

Re: Do not send Opt-in WUs if no work is available

OK, so trying various, the 1.9GB was the setting that would not let a CEP2 through, while everything else kept running. The message for CEP2, [with 7 cores C4CW, 1 core CEP2] was:

12686 World Community Grid 1/18/2013 3:36:40 PM Sending scheduler request: Requested by user.
12687 World Community Grid 1/18/2013 3:36:40 PM Requesting new tasks for CPU
12688 World Community Grid 1/18/2013 3:36:40 PM [sched_op] CPU work request: 257896.95 seconds; 0.00 devices
12689 World Community Grid 1/18/2013 3:36:45 PM Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks
12690 World Community Grid 1/18/2013 3:36:45 PM [sched_op] Server version 701
12691 World Community Grid 1/18/2013 3:36:45 PM No tasks sent
12692 World Community Grid 1/18/2013 3:36:45 PM Message from server: The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 needs 1419.03MB more disk space. You currently have 628.97 MB available and it needs 2048.00 MB.
12693 World Community Grid 1/18/2013 3:36:45 PM No tasks are available for the applications you have selected.

Trial and error, the maximum allowed diskspace setting would actually be quite a bit greater than 2GB, and still stop the CEP2 coming... depends on what else is selected to run exclusively or concurrent in sciences.

Sorry, can't offer you the tickbox, but it would be a workaround to still get alternate work and not get the "too heavy" i.e. the trick to be able to use "if there is no work for..." and not worry. BTW, my centrino happily runs CEP2 at high efficiency, just there's not much work done... 3rd job at most for the bulk it's been processing, so deselected CEP2 for the profile of that host.

edit: highlight critical log line.

Re: Do not send Opt-in WUs if no work is available

Could you change your BOINC setting for network transfer speeds? I know this would affect all downloads, but doesn't CEP2 require a certain speed?

Re: Do not send Opt-in WUs if no work is available

Yes, but that's been lowered to something like 64Kb for CEP2... not a lot.
