I'm coming from the Boinc forums because they say me that my issue could be project specific. I'm only running two projects GPU capable, this one and the DstrRTgen.
[Copy&Paste from Boinc forums] Sorry if I'm making a trivial question. I've asked the same recently but I'm not sure if it's right or wrong what's happening. I'm using the latest Boinc client that is available from the Ubuntu repositories (version 7.0.27 x86) in an Ubuntu 12.04.1 64 bits. Plus, I have a Nvidia 450 GTS suitable for CUDA. I've tuned the general options to have less impact in my everyday use of the computer and everything is fine. If I'm going to be off my desk for a while I choose the option "always use GPU" from the Boinc manager in order to speed up my tasks. Of course, the GPU temperature quickly rises and the system becomes more or less unusable, but I don't care because I'm not gonna use it. After coming back I put this option in its default value "use GPU as in preferences". After 2 or 3 seconds, I'm already using the computer as usual, even the GPU temperature is around 30ºC. But.... all this is only apparently. Although the system seems stable, if I try to play a YT video, its audio and image are jerky. No matter how long I wait, sooner or later I'm forced to close the session to recover the normal behavior. ¿Is this normal in my computer scenario? ¿Is still processing the GPU despite the change of option? I know this is a minor problem with an easy workaround, but I'm curious :) Thanks anyway! |

But have you been in the "computing preferences"->"processor usage" setup and made sure that the two boxes "While computer is in use" and "Use GPU while computer is in use" are unchecked.
----------------------------------------Then you have also to set the time of the idle duration after which the CPU and GPU will resume work. A good value is 3 minutes. Now if all this is ok then you should not have any issue. If it is still the case then maybe your video card has problems. The 450GTS is not very powerful so it may not be able to handle well multiple tasks. The Nvidia card is unfortunately not optimal for use for HCC. HCC has been designed with OpenCL. Nvidia support and optimization of OpenCL is not terrible as they use CUDA. I use ATI cards and Nvidia ones (580 and 680). There is much more stuttering with the Nvidia ones when the GPU is crunching, but it should stop after the GPU and CPU work is suspended. ![]() |

Hi.
I had already disabled the GPU computation while computer is in use (5 min). Now I've unchecked the HCC project to see what happen. Thanks. |

Some notes:
1) Verify that the "computed based on preferences" is selected on the activity menu. 2) And this is maybe just HCC-GPU related, do deselect the "Leave application in memory, when suspended". Latter ensures that the science apps unload from memory. In Task Manager, with "View All User processes", sorted alphabetically, there then would not be any wcgxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx type processes to be found. If there are, it means something in BOINC is not stepping back and freeing up your resources. Whilst, you say you play YT (YouTube?) when you have trouble. Don't know which program is used by YT, flash or html5, something else, but if there were a program that can be identified, then you can add e.g. a <exclusive_app>youtube.exe</exclusive_app> to the cc_config.xml file, <options> section. This would stop BOINC until the video has ended, the video play program has ended. Was discussed a month or two ago, and the user possible having found a workaround. If your [advanced] search the forums, it may be re-traceable what this user did. Can't remember exactly, as YT usually runs within a web-browser. |
