Trying to install BOINC 6.10.58 on Kubuntu 12.04 (64-bit)

I am trying to install BOINC on Kubuntu 12.04 (64-bit). First time using linux.

1. I downloaded boinc_6.10.58_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh to my Downloads folder.
2. I followed the instructions for Ubuntu. "ls" -> "chmod +x boinc_6.10.58_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh" -> "./boinc_6.10.58_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh"
3. i do get a response "use /home/lau/Downloads/BOINC/run_manager to start BOINC" and a new BOINC folder, so everything looks good.
4. But, I don't see BOINC in my Applications tab or Muon Software Center. Synaptic Package Manager only shows various packages of BOINC 7.0.27 -- none of them installed. nothing about 6.10.58. (I tried using 7.0.27, but the BOINC manager couldn't find the BOINC client after rebooting.)

Do I need to do something else? Or am I doing something wrong? Thanks!

Hi,

You're much better off by running the BOINC install from whatever package manager there is on Kubuntu. In terminal the command on Ubuntu would be

sudo apt-get install boinc boincmgr

More help here http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC_on_Debian where Kubuntu is essentially based on Debian.

You mention Synaptic, so that would be your RPM.

The boinc client can be started from terminal with

sudo service boinc-client start **

edit **if having installed BOINC from the repository

Re: Trying to install BOINC 6.10.58 on Kubuntu 12.04 (64-bit)

it was actually very easy to install BOINC 7.0.27 that came with Kubuntu. it worked right after installing. i see a valid result within Results Status. but, after i shut down the computer and start up later, the manager could not find the client. there are user reviews that say that BOINC 7.0.27 does not work with Kubuntu 64-bit. i assume that's my problem with 7.0.27.

Does the

sudo service boinc-client start

terminal command not work?

Odd. BOINC somehow shows up in my Ubuntu menu somewhere under system or other... not exactly in a place you'd expect.

Here's some BOINC and location help for Kubuntu: http://askubuntu.com/questions/120966/how-to-install-boinc-at-home

Have not had to do any of that with any xUbuntu. Some installs the core client would not start, which is when I ran the start command I gave.
