Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - Gary Oldman, Colin Firth (2011)
----------------------------------------Absolutely fantastic movie but probably not for everyone. This is one of those movies that appears to move very, very slowly but has a tremendous amount going on. You have to pay very close attention if you're going to follow everything that is going on and catch every hint and nuance. The basic plot is that there is a Russian mole in 60's British Intelligence and the story is about how a "retired" agent goes about trying to find out who it is. However it turns out not to be quite that simple. If you happen to remember a short-lived series on A&E called Rubicon, it reminds me a lot of that only better. ![]() ![]() |

In Time: Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried
----------------------------------------I really enjoyed this movie. The basic premise is that once you turn 25, no one ages any more - everyone is immortal. But if you're a Torchwood fan and have seen the Miracle Day mini-series, you know what that means - overpopulation. So there has to be a mechanism to prevent that. Hence the movie's tagline 'for a few to be immortal, many must die.' I don't want to give too much away, but let's just say that the main characters end up becoming a sort of futuristic Bonnie and Clyde but with a little more class. Getting into the movie was a little rough. I thought it was going to be sappy and uninteresting, but it just got off to a slow start. It actually turned into a pretty good action movie as well as being decent science fiction. And since it also has a romantic angle it's something that you won't have to chain your SO up to get to watch with you. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by twilyth at Dec 12, 2012 8:35:27 AM] |

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: Great movie. A sort of cold case, murder mystery with a twist and a few subplots. It has a very slow, cold feel to it that I really enjoyed but it blazes in sections. My one complaint was the denouement which I thought was hurried and choppy, but the movie is rated at 2:40hr so I guess some sacrifices had to be made. Still, it deserves it's 4 out of 4 stars. (sexually violent and explicit in parts but not especially sexually graphic).
----------------------------------------Elephant White (also White Elephant): On it's surface this is about a rogue sniper doing a job but just beneath the surface it's about human trafficking in Thailand. There are several twists in this movie some you may see coming, some not. It's low budget but the shoot outs are still very well done as are the couple chase scenes. Kevin Bacon is in it as are a one or two other people you might recognize so the acting is pretty decent for what is required from the script. It seems pretty shallow at first and by any normal measure it probably is, but there is definitely a lot more to this movie than first appearances would have you believe. I really liked it but more for the personalities and the gun fights than the plot. It's definitely an ok movie for rainy weekend afternoon. Bounty Hunters: Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang: These 2 I only got about half way through and seemed awful. The second has Robert Downey Jr who I can only handle in small doses anyway, but were it not for that, I may have watched the whole thing. It seems to have a very quirky and in ways horrific plot but it was too much for me. RDJ is great as Sherlock Holmes, or at least passable, but this movie is from about 7 years ago and I don't think that he had quite mellowed enough yet for me. Bounty hunters just seems plain god awful. A low budget screamer that is just painful to watch. If you want to torture yourself or someone you love, queue this puppy up. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by twilyth at Dec 18, 2012 5:34:44 AM] |

Daybreakers (2009):
----------------------------------------With Ethan Hawke and William Dafoe, this was a pretty decent vampire movie, but not at all what you'd expect. It's more of an "I Am Legend", post-apocalyptic version of the future but with vampires - oh, and everybody survives, but as vampires. Yeah, weird huh? Well, not everyone is a vampire. There are a few humans and that's where the trouble starts since there is a blood shortage, naturally. And the movie has a pretty interesting take on what happens to blood deprived vamps. I can't say it was great but it was pretty good and had some interesting angles for a genre that really gets worked to death (yuk, yuk). ![]() ![]() |

Attack the Block (2011) :
----------------------------------------This is a very strange movie which won a couple of audience awards when it debuted. It's in the grand tradition of sci-fi B-movies but is very well done in my opinion and is far beyond your typical B-movie fare. The basic plot involves and alien invasion of an east end London "estate" - what we in the US would call a housing project - & the response of the local gang of "youths." But as cheesy as that sounds, and it does seem that way for maybe the first 20 minutes, don't let that turn you off, this is decent sci-fi/horror. If that's your genre, you can't miss this movie. edit: btw, I strongly suggest watching this with closed captioning/subtitles since unless you have a good ear for East London slang, you will be lost. Even with the transcription, some of the jargon will be unfamiliar. Also, the format seems to be 4:3 which tells me this must have originally been shot for TV, so if black bars bother you, be forewarned. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by twilyth at Dec 23, 2012 1:51:58 PM] |

The best recent movie I've seen is Cloud Atlas. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1371111/ At the end of the movie my eyes welled up with tears. I want to see that just for the special fx, but if it's a good story too . . . well damn, bonus! Blackthorn 2011 - Sam Shepard I didn't think I was going to like this movie, but it had Sam Shepard so I decided to give it a shot. Now, I have a thing for lonely, desolate movies and that's what this is on pretty much every level from the Bolivian high plateau where much of the story takes place to the psychological aspect. And to really accentuate this and make it more painful (or pleasant, depending on your perspective), the story is peppered with points of stark contrast. With that lead-in, you might find it hard to believe that this is the epilog to the story of Butch Cassidy of Butch and Sundance fame. The movie intro explains that in fact they did not die in a shoot out with the Bolivian Army, hence the story. And it's a good story too, but definitely on the melancholy side. edit: Oh, I almost forgot, I also watched Pulp Fiction. I know I've seen parts of it before but I never really got into it and I have to say that this time wasn't really much different. I sort of understand what people like about Tarantino. He definitely has a unique style. Personally it reminds me a bit of a tweeker on a 4 day bender, but hey, style is such a rare thing these days, you take it where you can find it. And regardless of what I may have thought of the movie as a whole, it was worth watching for that closing segment with the rednecks in gun shop. Now THAT was classic. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by twilyth at Jan 3, 2013 8:30:25 AM] |

I'll go with Wolf359 - Cloud Atlas was the best film I've seen in a long time. I'll have to watch it again, though - no idea what was going on.
As for the worst film, I read an article on aintitcoolnews which described 'Samurai Cop' as truly, truly aweful. An abomination. They weren't wrong. |

My personal Sci-Fi B-movie festival
----------------------------------------Glitch (sometimes listed as 'Static') (2008) What happens when you implant a cell phone chip in your brain and the brains of 2 of your friends? You don't want to know. This was a pretty awful movie but I managed to watch the whole thing. Spike (2008) I can't even begin to describe this except to say that it was stunningly awful. It was so bad you had to keep watching to see if it could get any worse and it never failed to disappoint. Alone in the Dark - 2 (2008 video) Much of this movie simply made no sense but it had shoot outs with a witch, so . . . what more do I need to say? The Vampire Effect 2003 also (Chin gei bin) (The Twins Effect) Japanese, dubbed. A stunningly awful movie that was also wonderfully awful. In fact, I feel a little guilty classifying as 'awful.' Plus Jackie Chan makes a guest appearance. John Carter (of Mars) 2012 I really enjoyed this. I don't understand why it did so poorly at the box office. OK, the story is a little dated, but it has that steam punk element going for it which is pretty cool and you've got to love the Tharks. The cinematography is fantastic and completely worthy of a Disney film as are the special effects. In fact, they are so well done, you don't even think of them as special effects. This really should have been a hit. In Bruges (2008) OK, not sci-fi, but I've been meaning to see this for a while. Definitely an off-beat and unpredictable movie about 2 hit men hiding out in a Dutch town. This is classic that you need to put on your to-do list. ![]() ![]() |
