could it be a wireless card isn't working? Yes, that is possible though the wireless router is more likely to go (at least given my experiences). I would love to help solve this for you but my eyesight isn't what it use to be so I can't see what you see there in Missouri. If you can describe what you're seeing in a tad more detail, I'm sure we can get this solved together. Correct me if what I describe you having is wrong. You connect to the internet using a cable modem. I have a dsl modem instead but it's probably very similar in that your cable modem has three cords/cables coming out of it. One is the power cord that goes into the AC outlet. The second is the cable that connects it to your cable provider. The third is an ethernet cable that goes to your wireless router. Moving on to your wireless router, you have the ethernet cable from your cable modem, the power cord for the wireless router and several, probably four, empty places to plug in cables (normally ethernet). Your now main computer is connected wirelessly. The old computer needs to be near the wireless router. Get an ethernet cable and plug it into the ethernet slot on the old computer and plug the other in to one of those empty ethernet slots on your wireless router. I presume the old machine is running some level of Windows. Open Network Connections and look for the ethernet connection doc. It probably has something under device name that sounds a lot like the internal modem in the computer itself, something along the lines of "LAN or High-Speed Internet" under type and perhaps something like "Local Area Connection" under name. Under status, you want it to say "Connected". If it says something like "Disabled", right click on that entry under that Name column to select it and then click on "Enable this network device" If it says "Connected", you should be able to get to the internet on the old machine. If you can pull up a website (like WCG eg) in a browser, you're connected to the internet and you should be able to have BOINC connect and get work. If you can get to a website but BOINC won't get work, then we have a problem with BOINC on the old computer. If you can't get it working via the enthernet connection, reboot once and confirm it still doesn't work via ethernet. If it does work, you can at least have the machine crunching while we work on the wireless connection next. Sorry for all the details. I'm not assuming you're an idiot or such. Just want to pin down exactly what error is keeping your old computer from crunching. You're wireless router (and cable modem) is (are) working or you wouldn't have your new machine running. If we can get it working with an ethernet connection, we will narrow things down to the wireless card, the driver for the wireless card, the network connection for wireless. Oh, just in case you're wondering (probably not), you can have an ethernet and wireless connection at the same time on the old machine. I've done that on my laptop before. |

Good Tuesday Morning Team Congratulations Coingames Dr Mike. What Keith was trying to do was to give you a pretty much exhaustive how to. It is a bit like one of your patients saying I am sick, what is wrong with me? You need details. Perhaps if you tell us about your modem and your router. Are there two different boxes as described by Keith? Is your new computer connected by a ethernet cable from the router or is it wirelessly connected? Just those answers will help narrow down the cause. Everyone have a great day. Keith, you hooked me on the Countdown numbers ?? |

Keith, I dont see anything for network connections or ethernet doc. Over my head. lol Dr. Mike Check the system tray on the bottom right of the screen. There should be some sort of icon for the wireless connection (mine's a computer with waves to the right). Right click on that and you should see a line for Open Network Connections. That will list your connection docs. |

I'm lost.. lol That's a wise course of action just about any time you run into a problem with Windows. You probably changed something that fixed it but the change didn't go into effect until the reboot. |
