I just installed wcg on my new computer and it will not connect to the servers. I have tried playing around with the firewall I have through norton but even when I allow the program it still will not connect.. is there any other way I can get this to work?

Hi, welcome to forums
Can you please copy / paste your messages / event log from start to bottom in a reply. Then we can read how far the system got and the setup. |

I'm experiencing similar problem. On the computer I already had up-and-running BOINC 6.10.58 without any problems.
This morning it started to give the message: "connecting to localhost" and it remained so during the whole day, multiple restarts and various tweaks. I'm using Windows 8 Pro x64 on i5 750 with 8 gigs of RAM. I've just installed version 7.0.31 but it's the same thing... |

I think I'm running into the same error here.
I tried installing the current version on my Win7 box, installer completed successfully, on program execution I get the advanced view by default and it just says 'Connecting to localhost' in the bottom right box on the navbar. Messages won't appear at all, it just sticks at a white box, doesn't generate the file either. I'm baffled. |

Same issue over here. It is not firewall related, as I have switched it off, but still without success.
I am running Windows 7 64bit on a desktop. On my laptop (also W7 64bit) everything is running fine. |

We're all sorry for the connect troubles, but without information such as requested in my first reply, there is very little to know and lots to guess [in the wild]. The techs in past have asked for expanded log flag settings to see where things break down. Here's such a request: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewpostinthread?post=337106
Please provide and we can proceed to diagnose. |

Whilst, "not connecting to localhost" is an entirely different issue from connecting to WCG. The first thing to check is if the actual core client is running... boinc.exe. When installed as service [Protected application execution], the Task Manager Service tab when having selected [show processes from all users] in the process tab, should show BOINC as Running in the status column. Then, if it was installed as service, you need to either manually add the user to the boinc_users group or install BOINC with "Allow all users". The message log, first 30 lines at start up would have told us allot of that [old log entries found in stdoutdae.txt file located in the C:\ProgramData\BOINC folder (could be hidden).
At any rate, the prime point to establish is if boinc.exe is running, else the boincmgr.exe cannot connect to boinc.exe [the actual process manager of BOINC]. When that's done, then port 31416 needs to be open. [used by BOINC only over IP 127.0.0.1, which never touches the internet]. |

My Win7 installation was working four days ago (10 July 13). Had worked fine, I think (though I don't look at it very often) Longtime. (My Member Statistics History looks reasonable, though)
----------------------------------------Now it is stuck at "connecting to localhost". As ever, I don't think I've "done anything" to my system... obviously, I have, of course. But can't figure out what. A few pointers for other trying to fix similar... I don't quite understand boinc.exe... It doesn't appear in the list, if you call up services.exe. It does show as a "Process" in the Task Manager. Regarding the "either manually add the user to the boinc_users group or install BOINC with "Allow all users".", above... a) I don't have a "boinc_users" group on my machine, as far as I know. (No such user on the "Users" tab of my Task Manager window... but maybe it doesn't show groups.) b) Maybe I set it to "Allow all users"? c) Maybe I'm not "running as service"? ... anyway... it worked four days ago, doesn't work now. Sigh. === Further experiences.... Subsequently, I tried (Boinc manager) 1) Advanced/ Shut down connected client 2) Select Computer, to which I typed in "localhost" That seemed to get things going again. (A simple reboot of the whole PC had not started things up for me, as it has in the past. Not sure whether my Shutdown/Select has fixed things "for good", but it has held for a couple of hours. But how did the connection die? Will it happen again? It isn't something I'd be likely to notice. Sigh.) [Edit 1 times, last edit by Sheepdog at Jul 14, 2013 12:17:47 PM] |

@Sheepdog, I have encountered this in the past and on that particular system, I gave up after a week and did a system reinstall which fixed the problem (although I would expect that since it allows all other non-Boinc related programs to be reinstalled too).
----------------------------------------I can't say what the particular fix was, but in relation to noticing if Boinc and workunits are running, I would suggest installing another program boinctasks which allows you to monitor running boinc tasks even remotely. You could also consider running a desktop gadget boinc monitor which takes up little real estate on your desktop to alert you if your problem were to happen again. Good luck with betting boinc back up and running and I hope you find this useful ![]() ![]() Crunching in memory of my Mum PEGGY, cousin ROPPA and Aunt AUDREY. |
