I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I can't find it anywhere. I've got one device that gives the max to the Grid, runs 24/7 (I have temp monitor and fan control), yet for going on four years I get only 107 points per hour. I see the first-place device is getting 12,000 points per hour. How is this possible? Or rather, can I increase my computer's performance? It's nothing special - iMac, OS X 10.6.8; ATI Radeon HD 4670; 4GB memory; 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3. It must have something to do with a GPU? Somewhere in about this computer I saw Nvidia or something like that (but now I can't find it). I don't know. I'm a novelist and poet, not a techie - I use the computer for writing and web research, and everything else goes to the Grid. I'd just like to get more out of it if possible. Thanks for any easy-to-understand help - that is, keep in mind who you're dealing with here. Fiction writer? Poet? Plus I'm 65!

William, if you look at this https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=GPU#610you will see that the HD 4600 series will not work on GPU, so I expect you need not worry about how to do it......sorry

Scribe, thanks for the fast answer. Rats.
---------------------------------------- I get the impression that I can't install a proper GPU on this computer - I'd need a new computer? For future reference, is there a Mac that has the right kind of GPU? And any GPU that isn't on that list will work? Are there some that are better than others (power, reliability, not starting fires)? I may be old, but somehow I still always want more horsepower - probably because I grew up surrounded by freeways, inhaling aldehydes, peroxyacyl nitrates and VOCs. You never get over that. Sorry to run on like this...I can't help it...it must have been the VOCs... ![]() ![]() |

Hi, William,
So you were sniffing all that wonderful stuff, while the moto-vehicles were exhaling lots of GG CO2 [some claim to be good for plants, except not so good for the cultivars... those we grow food with]. For GPU card advice suggest you mosey over to the GPU Support forum and read around. There's selection for lots, from cheap to expensive, from regular to monster cruncher. Key is, select a card that is good with the so-called OpenCL language which is something different to OpenGL, which most all cards can handle. Be careful, that good at OpenCL AND CUDA [a NVidia proprietary], does not exist yet. Some projects outside WCG are CUDA only [do not run on ATI cards at all]. |

....and also note that it only runs under Windows at present......

I thought Windows might be involved. Oh well.

If you really wish to contribute with more horse-power for WCG (e.g. you are somewhat dedicated/addicted like I am :) ), but want to get a fast way for getting more points per hour...you can concentrate on GPU as long as HCC is alive (100 more days at current estimates...however I am gently hoping for more WUs to crunch since the development of the GPU app has taken a very long time...).
----------------------------------------I am doing around 3120 WCG points per hour with an overclocked Sapphire HD7970 running at 1150 MHz core and 7000MHz GDDR5 (925 and 5500 original frequencies respectively). I use the app_info file you might have seen around in the forums, running 12 parallel GPU WUs on that card - getting a GPU utilization of 96-98% almost constantly. For CPU I have a Core i7 3930K @ 4400MHz currently, Quad-channel memory kit for getting a good bandwith to the GPU (currently at 1866MHz, CL9 1T). Also I crunch from a RAM-disk at 4GB allocated of my 16GB total RAM, to keep my SSD healthy and to squeeze that last piece of performance from not having BOINC waiting for I/O operations. At least that's my recipie for 3120 points per hour at the moment :). But basically as long as we have GPU WUs to crunch, it is much more efficient and will give you more points to just build a PC based on AMD's piledriver CPU With 8 "cores" and use that money saved compared to an intel platform to put more focus of an HD7970 for instance. When I run my system 24/7 I ma out at around 1 000 000 WCG points per day. Unfortunately you don't get Quad-channel from AMD platforms. Only the X79 intel platform (on consumer side) will give you that. ![]() Join The International Team: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=CK9RP1BKX1 AMD TR2990WX @ PBO, 64GB Quad 3200MHz 14-17-17-17-1T, RX6900XT @ Stock AMD 3800X @ PBO AMD 2700X @ 4GHz |
