Re: Heatsink Compound - Silver Paste or White Gloop?

Yeah - I liked the cooling power of all that surface area as well as how quiet it is. Fortunately it fitted in my big Antec case just fine!

It was a bit unfortunate that I could only set it up to blow the air up or down, but due to the size of the case my rear 120cm exhaust fan is actually above it so it's not a problem pointing it up and keeping with the flow of air also coming through the air filter from the front fan. Plus my PS has a fan in the bottom.

I don't know if you meant to refer to P4 as P$, but it's a good point. Bit harsh pricing for my upgrade from 2Ghz to 3Ghz at Christmas (All I could afford, but I got the HT and 800Mhz FSB I wanted). All I hear now is how much better AMD chips are at running the grid client. Ho-Hum! - Vaio knows all the technical details raised eyebrow

Re: Heatsink Compound - Silver Paste or White Gloop?

yes P4.

I have been reading all of vaio's postings on AMD processors - he is quite undetered from his thinking and I agree with his observations. I am also running the agent on an Athlon XP 1,8 GHz unit - not overclocking, and it gives me a 180 performance rating as opposed to a 157 on the P4 running at 2,3Ghz. (slightly beefed up from 2Ghz)

The only conclusion is that the floating point operations of the agent run quicker onthe Athlon. When I compare the systems using applications that are disc or graphics intensive, I prefer to use the P4 machine - it is faster given the same disk size/type, memory and video memory.

I guess this goes to prove that there is no universal anything for everything .... not even the internet!! - LOL

Re: Heatsink Compound - Silver Paste or White Gloop?

Yeah - that's right, I remember it being around the FPU now.

I have no experience with AMD really as I've only ever run Intel... ever since my first 16Mhz 386sx nearly 15 years ago now!! (Wow - has it really been that long?!?!?)

So would your conclusion be that I should stick with P4 for my everyday machine, but if I wanted to get a dedicated cruncher then go for AMD? I'll be interested to see how it all pans out as the new types of chip develop.

and that is the "recomendation of the day" for all those who want a quiet PC that doesn't overheat. ... and to think that it all started off over a beer - "A BET FOR A BEER" that it would work - and has been working for over a year now shock shock shock

Deatils here: http://www.markusleonhardt.de/en/oelrechner.html

Now that is something that vaio should try out biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin

Good points there Robsab........for rendering etc the P4 still has the edge but A64 and x2/dual core in particular is removing that Intel advantage.

Horses for courses and good for the consumer to have the competition. smile

Re: Heatsink Compound - Silver Paste or White Gloop?

This is turning into a cool thread sorry d oh

I think I'll do some experiments at the weekend with the Silver Paste its called mx-1 from www.arctic-cooling.com. It says that top performance comes after 200 hours of running - maybe in both cases the heatsink wasn't seated square on the cpu. I'll post back with my experiences

It's definitely now not a secret that if you want a quiet cruncher Arctic Cooling is the way to go.

Maybe I should get some sponsorship from them for the MOT website biggrin

shock

Re: Heatsink Compound - Silver Paste or White Gloop?

if you want quiet AND cool....water cooling is the way to go biggrin

sidenote...if you're using some mx-1 stuff from arctic cooling, then you're not using the earlier mentioned arctic silver... wink

arctic cooling works for you... smile i'm gonna stick with my thermalright, though...see my link earlier(compares 25 different heatsinks, including yours) and let the numbers speak for themselves biggrin

Re: Heatsink Compound - Silver Paste or White Gloop?

The weekend was too far away. After taking your combined advise I've removed the gloop and replaced it with just a dab of the silver paste on both the Heatsink and the CPU die.

White Gloop 46C with a 29C Motherboard
MX-1 46C with a 29C Motherboard

It claims that it gets better after 200 hours so roll on Tuesday next week wink .

I'll let you know - I'm with Robsab though as a convert to AC
