Norton 360 keeps deleting and quarantining Beta files.
----------------------------------------How do I stop this from happening? Here's some notes from Norton 360 (clipboard): 2012-06-02 19:34:47,High,wcgrid_beta13_vina_6.25_windows_intelx86 (wcgrid_beta13_vina_6.25_windows_intelx86) detected by SONAR,Quarantined,Resolved - No Action Required,c:programdataboincprojectswww.worldcommunitygrid.orgwcgrid_beta13_vina_6.25_windows_in telx86 2012-06-02 14:18:18,High,wcgrid_beta13_vina_6.25_windows_intelx86 (wcgrid_beta13_vina_6.25_windows_intelx86) detected by SONAR,Quarantined,Resolved - No Action Required,c:programdataboincprojectswww.worldcommunitygrid.orgwcgrid_beta13_vina_6.25_windows_in telx86 2012-06-02 11:21:19,High,wcgrid_beta15_vina_6.12_windows_intelx86 (wcgrid_beta15_vina_6.12_windows_intelx86) detected by SONAR,Removed,Resolved - No Action Required,c:programdataboincprojectswww.worldcommunitygrid.orgwcgrid_beta15_vina_6.12_windows_in telx86 2012-06-02 11:21:09,High,wcgrid_beta15_vina_6.12_windows_intelx86 (wcgrid_beta15_vina_6.12_windows_intelx86) detected by SONAR,Removed,Resolved - No Action Required,c:programdataboincprojectswww.worldcommunitygrid.orgwcgrid_beta15_vina_6.12_windows_in telx86 2012-06-02 11:20:59,High,wcgrid_beta15_vina_6.12_windows_intelx86 (wcgrid_beta15_vina_6.12_windows_intelx86) detected by SONAR,Quarantined,Resolved - No Action Required,c:programdataboincprojectswww.worldcommunitygrid.orgwcgrid_beta15_vina_6.12_windows_in telx86 2012-06-02 11:20:49,High,wcgrid_beta15_vina_6.12_windows_intelx86 (wcgrid_beta15_vina_6.12_windows_intelx86) detected by SONAR,Quarantined,Resolved - No Action Required,c:programdataboincprojectswww.worldcommunitygrid.orgwcgrid_beta15_vina_6.12_windows_in telx86 2012-05-31 15:32:37,High,wcgrid_beta13_vina_6.25_windows_intelx86 (wcgrid_beta13_vina_6.25_windows_intelx86) detected by SONAR,Quarantined,Resolved - No Action Required,c:programdataboincprojectswww.worldcommunitygrid.orgwcgrid_beta13_vina_6.25_windows_in telx86 |

You can set up Antivirus and SONAR exclusions - thus, excluding the whole of the BOINC directory.
----------------------------------------From within Norton, go into Settings, Computer, and then Antivirus and SONAR Exclusions - from which, you can exclude the BOINC directory. |

Why pay money to slow down your PC with something like Norton?
If you got a genuine copy of Win (XP,Vista, Win7) you can get Microsoft Security for FREE http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/security-essentials-download I'm using it for the past 2 years on my 5 PCs & it picks up all the nasty bits. PS I'm no angel & sometimes go into very nasty sites devilish |

Copycat-Digital, although I'm sure that you're safe (and I know others aren't keen on Norton), I personally prefer to have an independant company (i.e., not Microsoft) attempting to keep my PC secure. After all, if it wasn't for the inadequacies of the Microsoft products in the first place, we wouldn't need anti-virus products at all...

Thanks! Now let's just hope I never get a virus in that directory :) Another directory to consider excluding is ProgramData\BOINC I've not had a problem since having both excluded. BTW, I exclude these folders from both Scans and SONAR detections. So that means you have two configuration changes to make Good luck with your crunching! Crunching in memory of my Mum PEGGY, cousin ROPPA and Aunt AUDREY. |

Thanks! Now let's just hope I never get a virus in that directory :) Given how BOINC is structured, and sandboxed, and checks the integrity and completeness of files belonging to it's science applications that it will run, about probability zero. *Nothing* on the planet gives BOINC reason to launch anything suspect [that what has not come from a project you chose]. This is why the "do not scan the disc when storing and reading the data_dir" has never been considered to be an unsavory advise. Norton I consider unsavory if it would with that scan exclusion not continue to read memory content [My Avast does]. How to get a virus: Attach to an non-endorsed project! Recently I noted a BOINC project name with link being dumped in the Berkeley projects forum by a P.S: Grab a BOINC client build from a torrent or some non-trusted private compiler and then you could be in doo-doo country. One possible scenario with excluded boinc data directory comes into my mind. A worm or virus may scan the computer to be infected for the existence of boinc processes, searches for the data directory and tries to install itself into this location. And when the virus will be started from this location it will never be detected ... except by process and memory scanning by the antivirus software.
----------------------------------------I don't want to start a fear situation, but the idea that there is only the boinc process and his child processes who can read and write into the data directiory is a bit wrong. Excluding the data directory may be risky ... as soon as the black hats discover this issue. But to be honest ... how big is the chance to get a virus that is tailored to use this situation? Suggest to connect up with the developers and lay it out to them where the gaps are. They will give it the greatest attention, since if there is no trustworthy computing, that's the end of BOINC.
