Personally, if continued CPU processing ends this project 1 day earlier, and gets the results to the scientists 1 day earlier, I'm all for that! It might mean a cure 1 day sooner! But the same CPU power, if diverted, might have cured HIV a month earlier, that being a project which doesn't have a GPU option. I hadn't thought about it that way, and of course you are correct! Unfortuneately I have a personal reason go working on HCC right now, but I will be back on FAAH very soon... So many projects, so little time... |

Buy a good PSU, gold or platinum. Power requirements of a system do not change due to PSU efficiency... just cost of the power in electricity. Power supplies have a 'sweet spot' for efficiency, normally 75-85% of rated. Over that, energy from the wall per watt used goes up rapidly. running at 30% rated load is every bit as inefficient in cost from wall per watt used for system. It all has to do with the PSU converting AC to DC for the computer to use. It takes energy to convert. Buy a PSU based on 'sweet spot' AND based on your system max useage being at the PSU's sweet spot. Every PSU will have the information available. It pays to do the legwork.
----------------------------------------A well matched Gold or Platinum can cost hundreds of dollars less a year in electricity bills if running 24/7 crunching for science. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 3, 2012 1:03:55 PM] |
