UBUNTU

Does GPU Processing work on UBUNTU? I have two machines running UBUNTU 12.04. They are running BOINC 7.024 and each have GTX 295s running CUDA 4.2.

Neither machine will download a GPU work unit for WCG. I know the NVIDIA drivers are properly installed because Collatz works fine on the two GPUs. I know the GTX 295 is supported because it works fine on my Windows 7 machine.

Are the GPU WU supported on UBUNTU?

Re: UBUNTU

Hi mclaver,
Ubuntu works fine if it has up-to-date OpenCL drivers installed. (HCC does not use CUDA.) People recommend BOINC 7.0.31 or higher version.

added: WCG does not have a HCC version for Linux - - yet. Ubuntu runs our CPU versions fine. Sorry I did not think about this. smile

Not here at WCG, only windows has currently any GPU-applications.

So now I am confused, one person says it works fine and another says it does not work on UBUNTU. Can someone tell me if GPU processing only works on Windows for WCC or will it work on UBUNTU. By the way I am using NVIDA driver 304.51 compute capability 1.3 and Opencl 1.0 under ubuntu.

Re: UBUNTU

I haven't found an official answer anywhere, but nobody running Linux has been successful at getting any GPU work.

The WCG GPU app is currently for Windows only. There are other boinc projects that will run on Ubuntu but you'll have to do some research because I don't know what they are.

Re: UBUNTU

Other BOINC GPU projects that run on Ubuntu include:

GPUGRID (Nvidia cards only)
MilkyWay (both Nvidia and AMD; double precision cards only)

The ones below run on both Nvidia and AMD cards and don't require double precision:
POEM
Einstein
Albert
PrimeGrid
Collatz

There are several others, but I haven't personally run them and can't vouch for them.

If WCG had a Linux version for GPU HCC, I'd put 5 cards right on it. As is, they are busy with some of the projects above.

It's understandable why you might be confused. Both answers are (technically) correct as you asked if Ubuntu will do GPU crunching. Yes, it will but there is no WCG GPU for any OS other than Windows. As this is the WCG forums the respondent should have told you that no, Ubuntu cannot get GPU work from WCG.

Hope that clears things up a bit.

Thanks, I have successfully been run GPU processing on UBUNTU for a while. I think your list is missing SETI which will run on almost anything. As you can see, I have made significant contributions to GPUgrid, Collatz and Milkyway.

I tried moving all of my NVIDIA GPUs to WCG. I did not see the announcement that WCG only supports windows. I guess I will be able to keep my position on some of the other projects, while I double my contriobution on WCG.

Thanks

Yes i was confused too because someone told me too to use ubuntu when 7000 series dont run on XP. So im happy i installed Win7 and dont tried day in and day out how to get GPU Units in Ubuntu while i dont have any experience with Linuxdistributions too ^^
