OpenCL support for Windows XP was dropped a while back. You can't run this project on Windows XP. It takes too much resources to support a deprecated operating system when most people with modern cards are already running their latest Windows and Linux distributions.

I'd look at the log when Boinc first starts: ATI GPU 0: Cypress (CAL version 1.4.1741, 1024MB, 991MB available, 4378 GFLOPS peak) OpenCL: ATI GPU 0: Cypress (driver version CAL 1.4.1741 (VM), device version OpenCL 1.2 AMD-APP (938.2), 1024MB, 991MB available) You'll need to see something like this. If you don't have the second line reinstall the Catalyst control center or I belive the SDK drivers. ![]() ![]() |

Yes you can run this project on XP. The box I'm typing on is running it now with a 5830. While I can't say for sure a 6770 will work here's what to try. What you need is ATI driver version 11.8. You can find it here. That is the last ATI XP driver that supports the APP SDK runtime that is needed to run this project. Shut down boinc and uninstall whatever driver you have now. Download and run Driver Sweeper to remove any remnants of your old drivers. Install 11.8, reboot and you'll find out if it works. Good luck.

I've been running GPUs on my XP with my 5670 just fine since the first beta. |

CPU = Q6600
----------------------------------------It might be worth noting that some people report GPU-related errors with XP SP3 (which is what I have), and mention downgrading to SP2. That's not an option for me, but it may help someone else. I do see "ATI GPU 0: ..." but no OpenCL version. I'll try updating to the 11.8 drivers. ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by ashes999 at Oct 23, 2012 11:36:03 AM] |

@nanoprobe I am very surprised (and pleased) that I now see the OpenCL line in my BOINC event manager, and I can crunch GPU tasks. Woohoo!
----------------------------------------Thanks for all your help. I'm, quite frankly, surprised that this worked out so favourably :) ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by ashes999 at Oct 23, 2012 12:15:16 PM] |

yes 12.1 ist the last cat driver with opencl support for XP..so every card works from 5xxx and 6xxx series. Perhaps you downloaded a cat package without openCL driver? Only 7xxx series need to upgrade your OS to vista or higher.

Yes, it's possible. Given how often XP BSODs with the wrong GPU driver, I'm happy sticking to 11.8. Is there a "good enough" reason to upgrade to 12.1, such as a major performance improvement or bug fix?
