I stopped my GPU's from running GPUGRID and started running HCC and find I get no extra runtime credit for my 4 GPU's. I can earn my sapphire badge just as fast without using my GPU's. You would think a GPU could be considered the same as a computer core and accumulate the time for both the GPU and the CPU. Both time are used when generating points.

But remember, it's all about science, not only badges. With your 4 gpu you can do much more work in the same time, even if you won't be rewarded with badge accordingly. |

I think this is being talked about here too...

GPUGRID wu's has a 97% usage of the GPU almost 100% of the time. HCC has a 91% usage of the GPU 66% of the time. I can do more science with my GPU's at GPUGRID than I can do at World Community Grid . |

Unfortunately that is NOT WCG's take on things! At WCG, currently, a day is a day is a day, so whether you use a cpu or a gpu, when you crunch for 24 hours you gets a days credit. It doesn't matter whether you crunch one unit or a thousand units, 24 hours is 24 hours. And if is unfair to compare gpugrid and WCG, gpugrid has been 'doing' gpu's for several years now and WCG JUST came out of the FIRST gpu beta less than 3 weeks ago!!! There are ALOT of growing pains yet to go here at WCG. Seti, the grandfather of ALL Boinc projects, went thru these growing pains when they first started releasing gpu units too, Seti figured it out in a way that best suited them, WCG will too!! ![]() ![]() |

Not quite true... if you manage to get multiple WU's to run on one card, the elapsed time [which is the time credit base], would multiply by that factor [the same as the hyperthreading concept, get 2 time units for 1]. What WCG could learn from other grids on time administration and badge awarding... let's face it, WCG is the de-facto gold standard. Badges were invented here.

And THAT is why I love these forums, it is like a meeting, one person says something and the next person chimes in with so simple an answer that the first person didn't even think of it!! I am guilty of NOT thinking it thru!! Those darn trees keep getting in the way of that forest!! THANKS SekeRob!!! ![]() ![]() |
