As for the guy who can't justify buying a 7950, I ask, why? I already explained in a previous thread how much faster 7950 is to 7870, and how much more it costs in comparison, and the cost per performance ratio is better with the 7950 than a 7870, with a decent margin. Well, if WCG only has GPU-work for an additional 3-4 months and if someone won't use GPU for non-WCG-projects, buying a 7950 is expensive. Also, going by Amazon.co.uk, here in Europe the cheapest HD-7950 costs roughly €300 or roughly $400 while the cheapest HD-7850 costs roughly €170, meaning the HD-7950 is roughly 80% more expensive but has only 63% higher single-floating-point-performance. HCC isn't the only OpenCL GPU project, there is PEOM, and there is also bitcoin mining which will give you a ROI within a few months of hashing. My 7950 already paid for itself through bitmining. Considering this is 2012, and WCG is looking to accelerating more projects, HCC won't be the last project. Prices are always much more reasonable in the US. IT Geeks like myself who have BOINC as one of their main hobbies, are more than happy to spend our money buying the best hardware for the job, dedicated to our projects. 179 days by latest dashboard calculation [who stabbed at 6 months ;?] Well, I did, sort of. At least it will be good for a day or two; maybe three? https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/...d,18662_offset,120#395692 |

I like the thought of getting a cash incentive, so I will investigate this more. In order for it to be a goer for me, I would need to know that the work done is worthwhile. One question I have is whether it is possible to assign GPU work to POEM whilst keeping CPU work dedicated to WCG? ![]() Crunching in memory of my Mum PEGGY, cousin ROPPA and Aunt AUDREY. |

As Folding@home has shown, all early GPU-adopters buying Ati-cards in 2006 and for large parts of 2007 was sitting with useless cards when an upgraded GPU-application was released. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. Last time I checked, POEM@Home and various other projects, even Folding@home, support these graphics cards. What's more, do you have any idea how the bitcoin network works? I bought my 7950 7 months ago, and have since earned 70 bitcoins with it. That's $826, it has already paid for itself. Therefore, your point is moot. This isn't 2006 or 2007, this 2012, you won't find HSA GPUs until 2014, so there is a long time until then. OpenCL is NOT new, there are no major changes coming to it anytime soon either. 2013 will be a refresh of today's graphics cards, decently slight improvement in performance. Thanks, BladeD I bought my 7950 7 months ago, and have since earned 70 bitcoins with it. That's $826, it has already paid for itself. That's very impressive, mmstick. I am definitely going to look into this very soon. A few GPUs bitmining to help fund my farm isn't going to put a big dent in the number of CPUs that will continue to work here at WCG., especially since the rivers are about to run dry soon. I don't feel guilty about considering this even though I vowed to build and run machines here at WCG in memory of my family I have lost to cancer. I sincerely hope that similar projects exist with the bitmining option. ![]() ![]() Crunching in memory of my Mum PEGGY, cousin ROPPA and Aunt AUDREY. |

It would be safe to say everyone has lost some family to cancer. I would probably look away from using AMD GPUs for bitmining right now, here is why:
----------------------------------------7950 consumes ~200 watts @ 0.56 GHash/s There are bitforce FPGAs shipping soon ( http://www.butterflylabs.com/order-form-bitforce-sc-jalapeno/ ) which achieve 4.5 GHash/s per unit (USB based, comes with its own bitmining software) at I assume around 20-40 watts, plus it is a lot cheaper than a 7950. I am transitioning to going full FPGA for bitmining, and using the bitcoins to buy hardware. FPGAs are finally getting to the point where they are affordable, so I wonder if maybe IBM could make an sell some FPGAs for WCG projects. FPGAs are, after all, a lot faster, and more power efficient than graphics cards. The bad things about FPGAs though is, the FPGA can be considered both the hardware and the program, so they can only do what they were made to do, and you can't make them do anything else.
