With GPU plowing it's way through HCC, aprox how many days are left for HCC (the number of days shown in Sekerob's dashboard is no help in this case)? Unfortunately, my run-of-the-mill-Joe-blow Intel GPU is not able to participate in the GPU/HCC party, so I still have to do CPU crunching (not complaining... it's just a fact). Thanks, CJSL Crunching for a better tomorrow... According to SekeRob's charts there are APPROXIMATELY 502 days left as of 2 days ago. The numbers were OVER 730 days when the gpu first started, so it is increasing its downward spiral. This is not JUST because of the gpu but I woulds guess ALSO because 2 other projects completed about the same time making for fewer total projects to chose from here at WCG. SekeRob's chart is here: http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q210/Sekerob/WCGYearsPi1Project.png They are ALSO provided in the link at the end of each of his posts. If you mouse click on the chart I provided the link to, it will get bigger and easier for older eyes to see. ![]() ![]() |

Here is what knreed said about HCC on Tuesday: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/...ead,34055_offset,0#396555
Roughly 100-130 days but they might add more work units from the project scientists. Lawrence |

Lawrence,
It can be just as with HFCC: when we expected project to finish pretty soon, Target 10 was announced, bringing 3-4 extra months of WUs flow, and now, Target 11 is rumoured to be launched. Same is here: 100-130 days are what the WCG team are aware of, but there can be much more in the chest |

Hi,
it would not make sense to develop a new GPU-Aplication to finish the Project in 100 instead of xx days. I expect a lot of new HCC-Work for us to crunch. |

Hello hajko2,
That seems very likely. It is up to the project scientists. Lawrence |

Hi, it would not make sense to develop a new GPU-Aplication to finish the Project in 100 instead of xx days. I expect a lot of new HCC-Work for us to crunch. Uhm, no sence to cut the times from 2+ years to 3 months... Well, guess I'll have to disagree with you, but to me this is a significant speedup regardless of more available work or not. BTW, it's also possible HCC will use the GPU-application for many years themselves after the WCG-part is finished. Looking on some numbers, the HCC-page shows 86 million images to process. It doesn't say if this was at the start in 2007 and neither how many years it took to crystallize and get these images, but let's say it took 30 years, meaning 7854 new images per day. If a CPU uses 1 hour per wu, HCC would need 327 computers to keep up with the daily production of new images, assuming no replication. With GPU on the other hand using 2 minutes per wu, HCC only needs 11 GPU's to keep up with 7854 new images per day. Is 7854 new images per day much too low? Possibly, let's say 100k new images per day. This puts the requirement at 4167 CPU's or 139 GPU's to keep up with production. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. 2 minutes per work unit? I think you mean 22 seconds per work unit with a HD 7970, with HD 8970 and the dual GPU cards within a few months to make that number smaller. Then, in 2014 HSA based GPUs will make CPUs 100% obsolete, work units will be able to run entirely off the graphics card with no CPU cores involved.

Providing that ALL have 7970 cards, realistically how many % of all the GPU crunching at this moment and 1 year ahead do you think have or will have 7970 cards? |
