Hey All!
----------------------------------------So, In the hours after the GPU HCC App has been released, I set up Milkyway@home to run at 1% usage, so that if there is ever a shortage of HCC GPU apps, I still have something for my GPU to crunch. However, I have a question. I don't want to grab a ton of WU for Milkyway@home when the HCC GPU app runs out of Work, incase I get some more. I know I can set up a profile for a computer to only request work for a certain amount of time, but I do have a question. On Milkyway@home, if I change the profile for My Computer to lets say Work, will that change my profile for the same computer at World Community Grid? Or is the profiles strictly for each project? Cause I have noticed that if you change one of the Computing Preferences in one project, it changes them in another. |

Hello Chase Tarson,
I have never run a non-WCG project to test this, but as far as I know your profile runs for all projects. If you change from HOME to WORK, WORK will be your new profile for both WCG and MilkyWay. Lawrence |

However, I have a question. I don't want to grab a ton of WU for Milkyway@home when the HCC GPU app runs out of Work, incase I get some more. 1) Nothing to worry about. Milkyway will not give you more than about 40 tasks per GPU, which is less than an hour of work, even with slow GPUs. So no need to worry about over filling your cache with MW. BOINC will get as much as it can from MW, fail, then try to fill up with HCC GPU, fail (wash, rinse, repeat). 2) This is where you should be using zero as a project resource share. BOINC is supposed to use a zero resource share to mean that it requests work from that project only as a last resort to keep the CPU/GPU/whatever busy. Only when the project that has a resource share of >0 is out of work, and your machine is now idle. Further, BOINC should only request enough work for right now. No filling of the cache with the zero resource project tasks. But I think this whole logic was broken by DA recently. So I have no understanding of how "0" / backup project work any more. |

Hey All! So, In the hours after the GPU HCC App has been released, I set up Milkyway@home to run at 1% usage, so that if there is ever a shortage of HCC GPU apps, I still have something for my GPU to crunch. If you set Milkyway to zero it should be treated as a "backup-project", meaning the client should only ask for work if idle GPU (or cpu if cpu-project). Also, it should only ask for one task per idle device. Note, not all BOINC-clients works correctly, so depending on client it's still possible will get more work than should. Maybe mis-remembers, but think it's fixed again in the 7.0.36-clients... On Milkyway@home, if I change the profile for My Computer to lets say Work, will that change my profile for the same computer at World Community Grid? Or is the profiles strictly for each project? Cause I have noticed that if you change one of the Computing Preferences in one project, it changes them in another. While the computer will be listed on the web-pages of the different projects to be the locations you specified, the client will use whatever location is the last specified and AFAIK it's the same for getting work. Meaning, even WCG will still be listed as example "home", you'll AFAIK get assigned tasks for your "work"-selection. The project-specific preferences won't be changed, while the global preferences will use the last edited preferences and these will be propagated to all projects (as long as uses same email-address). Where's two problems with WCG, one is the global and project-specific preferences is jumbled together, so difficult to know the difference. Also, WCG's preferences is buggy, meaning for atleast a couple of the project-specific preferences, if you change these you'll also incorrectly update the "time last edited" for the global preferences. Another weakness with WCG's preferences is, it's the only project accepting garbage-input on the web-page without giving any form of error-message. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. Thank you all for the replies, and I have set Milkyway@home to 0 for the Backup.

I had to change my climateprediction project to use school instead of default due to conflicting with WCG. This was happening in v6.x of boinc. Haven't tried changing it in v7 to see if it still does this.
