Clearing out my cache so I can upgrade from 6.10.xx to 7.0.28. I see I can separate the program directory and the data directory. Is anyone running the program on their OS drive with their data directory on a separate drive? Just wondering if this would be more efficient or better to leave everything one one drive. Appreciate any suggestions or tips.

Yes, I'm running 6.10.58 (under Win7 64bit) with the data directory on a separate drive. In my case, the main reason is to keep the ever-changing data off my SSD which is reserved for o/s and program files. It also makes data backups simpler. The separate drive is a RAID 5 data volume. I don't recall any issues with setting up BOINC to use a separate drive for data.

I am running on a dedicated partition. I think any speed gains come from being able to defragment quickly. I remember reading something(by SekeRob I think) that said something like 2-3% gains in performance.

Since your still on the same physical disk, would think your no different than all on same partition. Am using hard drive until ssd drives drop a little more for 500GB size. Will give it a shot to see how things go. When i go through the install, will boinc ask these questions before installation or do i have to select a advance install? Thanks for all the help.

I noticed a difference on one of my machines back when I was running CEP2. I was running multiple CEP2 work units at a time and so the second drive was dedicated solely to BOINC. I also used an old 4GB hard drive from a scrapped PC to use solely as virtual memory to minimize disk access competition. Anyone running torrent files would probably find this setup helpful too.

You will need to select "Advanced installation" in order to specify the data directory location. Cheers

I installed a SSD drive for my page file awhile back. Definately makes a difference. Since both of my rigs have 24GB+ memory, didn't need to big of one. Thanks to everyone for the help. Should be installing tonight as my cache runs dry.

That was painless. 1 down, 1 to go when I clear the cache. Thanks again.
