My Windows 7 64-bit system has serveral User Accounts (i.e., Admin, User1, User2, etc.) with BOINC 6.10.58 running on all Accounts.
1. After booting the OS and reaching the page where I have to choose which Windows User Account to go into, does BOINC start running Work Units while on this page? Or my system has to enter one of these User Accounts in order for WUs to starting running? 2. Similarly, after finishing my work in one of the User Accounts and choose Start --> Log off (Not "Shut down"), do WUs still keep running in the background? Thank you |

When you installed BOINC as service [in protected application execution], you basically told it to run without anyone being logged in on whatever schedule you specified [run when system is in use or not, or whatever preference you specified]. Logging out has no effect either. If you check in Task Manager as admin, click on the service tab, you'll see a line entry with the status column showing "Running".

You can't use GPU while running as a service. You have to make the choice of running only when logged in and getting GPU or running as a service independent of logging in and not having a GPU option.

You can't use GPU while running as a service. You have to make the choice of running only when logged in and getting GPU or running as a service independent of logging in and not having a GPU option. To qualify, on Windows after XP it's not possible to do GPU crunching in service install. On Linux as service [daemon] it is, because that''s the only way BOINC will run. As OS-X is essentially Unix, think it's the same for this platform as Linux. The bad experience I had in first week of using W8-64 Pro in "Microsoft Account" mode adds to the issue. Hotswapping when not installed as service or locking prior to switching, did also unload the client, so developers are looking at that to fix in the v7 client. Essentially, BOINC will restart when changing user [even when having selected "allow all users", which causes lots of lost Crunch time with tasks that [can] not be checkpointing frequently. Worst is, some can not reproduce it with latest development client that were build with W8 in mind. Essentially, client is not fully W8 ready, yet. Discussion to be continued in another place at another time, when progress on the matter is recorded. |
