We are another family touched by DMD, and I am so glad to have been able to contribute 90 days of processing time to get the gold badge for this project. The progress has enabled me to help raise awareness with friends and relatives. I am still crunching HCMD2 as there still seem to be WU's available. Anyone know if there will be a phase 3?

It's nice to see another project finish. Hopefully the "real life" results can be implemented soon. HCMD existed many years before I showed up, and many thousands of crunchers kept the project going from beginning to end. A nice way to say "thanks" is to keep crunching, also in other projects. Maybe they are a bit further away from your immediate situation, but only the fact that they are here in WCG tells me they are worthy. And who knows, maybe WCG will ask our help for a "Phase 3" sometime later. It would be a pity if you are not around at that time. ![]() Whether there is a phase 3 or not, in my view crunching for any of the other medical projects on WCG (or other DC sites) helps your particular favoured project indirectly also. Why do I say that? Well what will happen if say the Cancer or Aids projects yields a cure? Will all those working on Cancer or Aids cures suddenly be unemployed and retrain as hairdressers/plumbers/etc. Well.., yes.. and no.. There may be no need to work on Cancer or Aids any more but most of those scientists will have transferable skills, so they will simply move over to other projects looking for cures for other ailments (such as HCMD) with only a little retraining being needed. Finding a cure for one illness will also free up research labs and charitable funding to look for cures for other ailments. |

@ rembertw - I will certainly stick around for crunching on the other projects, might as well! Right now there are fewer and fewer HCMD tasks showing up and more of the other projects, so I plan to keep both machines crunching on these very important projects.
@ dustydave - You and I are both in the same situation. How old is your son? Mine is 3-1/2 and was recently diagnosed. He's missing exons 48-52, so it's Duchenne. He is still happy and walking, but not really talking. Hopefully we can see some real progress from this and other research within the next 5 years, it will be of extreme importance to all our young sons! |

Hi Mike (kismetix) we have a nephew, also called Mike, in the Philippines who is 6 years old with Duchene. I don't know the details of his specific case but its very frustrating not being able to do more for him directly. Fundraising for ongoing research is our best hope. My wife had two elder brothers who died in the late 1940s, but were probably misdiagnosed back then as having polio.
@Widdershins - good point about re-deploying of scientists. I have been a supporter of the WCG since an early interest in SETI@home back in 2006, so I fully intend to continue with whatever work is available. |

Well, some of us are working in a specific project for some important reason but the point is... Once your project is concluded and you are happy with it, please redirect your resources to other projects and remember that they are important for other people. For people who once gave you a hand.

CONGRATULATIONS FOR ALL CRUNCHING TILL THE END !
----------------------------------------I was directly concerned as my son is 34 and has a neuro-muscular since he was born. That is the interest of such research-i mean fundamental research- As the effects of the illness appear within a very long time we need not only to point to one gene but also to apprehend the interactions of the proteins involved in the processus. Still crunch for other projects as every research is directed to benefit humans and exchange between scientists do miracles sometimes ![]() |

I crunched my 5 year mission on this project did not think I would make it before the summer when it was intermittant and I had to shutdown a few months for cooling issues.. soon as the heat was not intense I cranked up and made it.. I got 20 CPU threads cranks out about 13-18 days of work in a day. even more depending on WU size.. lets hope all this info done works out and this of many terriable ailments are cured..

Hello Choj01
----------------------------------------Congratulations on attaining your 5 year mission mark! Your efforts are very greatly appreciated and applauded by us on HCMD. As for myself, I'm trying to hit the 4 year mark and it looks like I'll make it. There appears to be enough remaining workunits over the next couple of weeks to make this possible. Also, I seem to have picked up a couple of other badges on projects that downloaded onto my task list over the past couple of months. So, my single sapphire badge for HCMD now has some other badges to go along with it... [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Oct 12, 2012 3:16:14 PM] |

I'd also like to know if a phase 3 is planned...
