Re: Beta Test for Help Conquer Cancer - GPU v6.51

It looks like we had about 80 valid on our combined gpu crunching machines. The only errors I had were from a laptop with a 6350 getting 3 work units and trying to run them. The mix of systems we had

Windows 7 5870 boinc 6.12.34
xp64 5850 boinc 7.0.28
windows 7 5770 boinc 7.0.28
xp64 5770 boinc 7.0.28
wiin7 6570 and 6450 7.0.28
xp 64 6570 boinc 7.0.28

Re: Beta Test for Help Conquer Cancer - GPU v6.51

One of the things we are looking for in this beta is to get more info from users who are experiencing hung workunits at 99%. A couple of things that would be helpful if users who see this can provide:

  • Are you using the boinc CPU throttle? (Use at most N% of CPU)
  • Do you have a value set "While processor usage is less than <blank>" that is not 0?
  • Can you paste the last 3 -4 lines from stderr.txt? This can be found in the slot directory where the gpu workunit is running whcih is in the boinc data dir typically in ProgramData\BOINC\slots\. There are numbered directories in there and the slot where the gpu workunit is running should have the opencl binary.

Thanks,
armstrdj

Here my info. I have no configuration based on Boinc, but only set on default device profile on site:
1) I set on default profile "Use no more than 50%"
2) No.
3) I've deleted the work unit. Can I found it somewhere or it's gone?

Re: Beta Test for Help Conquer Cancer - GPU v6.51

Beta testing aims to identify problems before a project, in this case HCC GPU, moves into full production.

Thus [HWU]Melkor and others with the 99.415% 'hanging' problem should respond to this earlier post by WCG techs:

Thank you jonnieb-uk , I didn't see tech suggestions. Just replay, hope this will help.

Re: Beta Test for Help Conquer Cancer - GPU v6.51

I don't have a GPU suitable for these beta tests, but am interested.
Some suggestions and questions:

Suggestions: With your reports, please post details of your setup - hardware, O/S (32- or 64-bit), BOINC client version and whether 64-bit (64-bit O/S only), GPU driver version. Throttling setups were something no-one thought about until now. Anything else?

Questions:
Back in March 2012, just after a HCCGPU beta test run, I borrowed an ATI HD6870 card to get some experience with GPU crunching. I Installed it into a Q9650 machine under 32-bit XP SP3, with BOINC 6.10.58. BOINC would not recognise the GPU using ATI Catalyst 12.2 drivers, but it was OK under Catalyst 11.7. No GPU work was available from WCG, so I looked at POEM. They won't send work to BOINC clients of v6.x.x, only 7.x.x.
Noting some comments in this thread recommending v7.x.x, perhaps problems with v6.x.x clients here at WCG are some of the reasons that POEM insist on v7.x.x.

In my case I replaced 6.10.58 with 7.0.25. But I still couldn't run POEM because BOINC 7.0.25 would not recognise the GPU. I gave up and returned the card to its owner.
Has anyone succeeeded in running GPU tasks under BOINC 7.x.x with 32-bit XP and an ATI GPU?

One for the techs: Is there any chance that once production HCCGPU is under way, workarounds will be found to enable use of some of the GPU cards currently deemed unsuitable? (If not, so much for the "device independence" goal of OpenCL).

And from left field ... would there be mutual synergies if POEM were to come under the wing of WCG? (GPGPU/OpenCL experience <--> WCG support, volunteers, qudos, ... )

You can't get it back to try crunching it again but its results will be available for viewing on your WCG website account in your My Grid >> Results Status section. Filter on Project Name > Beta Testing

I can't speak for WCG, but I believe that they have a review process whereby their own advisers select the projects they want to work on. Since POEM has its own servers, forums etc. already set up, I don't know if they would want to subject themselves to that process, in addition to whatever other criteria that WCG has.

But I run both. I just set the resource share for POEM to "1", while leaving it at "100" for WCG. That way, I get as many POEM tasks as usual when there are no HCC betas available, but it will favor the WCG work when it is available (BOINC 7.0.36 64-bit).

Re: Beta Test for Help Conquer Cancer - GPU v6.51

I guess it's a little late now for crunchers struck with the 'hanging' beta-HCC-GPU_v6.51-WU issue to be reporting their cases to the Techs with the view of supplying Techs with live-information as the Techs requested then. Anyways, a situationer/feedback/summary from the Techs about what they saw or didn't see from this latest beta-GPU-WU run would help us elucidate matters.

Yes, thank you I've found them and errors occurred. What should I have to paste here?

I guess that's an open question, but you may find some light on the matter here.

Re: Beta Test for Help Conquer Cancer - GPU v6.51

I have no idea how the Use GPU never got selected, fact is I don't think I've ever looked at or selected anything in that tab

Glad I was able to help Bill. I don't remember for sure but I think use GPU never is the default setting. That may have changed with the 7.0.xx and up versions of BOINC but I've been using them since January and that's beyond my memory range. biggrin

Re: Beta Test for Help Conquer Cancer - GPU v6.51

I have aborted two of the GPU betas as I got to 99.415% and could go no further. I think I will abort the other two WUs I have that will have the same results. Any comments?
