The following was posted by WCG member mousie in a linux thread in the Suggestions/Feedback forum. I am moving it here for more visibility.
curious if anyone's gotten this to work using WINE yet? i've been able to run the ud/grid.org version this way(more or less the same project) for a few months...thought i'd try the wcg version this way. not sure what's wrong...i was able to install and run it the same way, but it's unable to download anything...was wondering if those that tried it with WINE had the same trouble? here's a screenshot using the ud version. i then uninstalled and tried the wcg version...here. it sat like that for a little while... i tried restarting, and each time i did so, it asked me to reregister... mostly curious to see how this runs compared to other projects i've tried...and maybe this'll give the linux gurus something to try (if they haven't already) while they wait for the real linux client. |

One of the WCG techs sent me a note on this. I quote him: I saw your post about people experimenting with running the agent under Wine. We did some experiments with that but found that we had to copy in various microsoft files to make it work. And, it did not show the status screen nor screensaver image. Given that there are licensing problems using the microsoft files and given that it is easy to create an agent that misbehaves using this approach, we are not inclined to encourage this. Sorry it isn't a more positive answer for you. Best regards, |

thanks
as i mentioned in my initial post, i've been able to run a similar client...of course, had to use various microsoft files, though was more curious why, if the grid client(my first screenshot) is supposedly very similar to the wcg client, and running the same human proteome project...one works and the other doesn't. weird. don't worry too much about it, though...i was more just hoping to provide an alternative to linux users while the linux client is in development. thanks again! |

I can't be certain why the UD software works on grid.org under WINE and the WCG does not, but I do know that there has been some enhancement of the UD software for the WCG, I think primarily in areas relating to security. Perhaps these modifications are the reason it does not. In any event, if you have to copy files from a Microsoft product to get it to work, copyright laws would get in the way of anyone recommending its use. You can be sure that the number one priority of the WCG team is building a linux client. They are committed to delivering it this year, and I am certain that the people they have working on it are among their most highly skilled. A client that runs in native linux will be the best solution. Best regards, |

.........Any progress to report yet re the Linux client? Just that it is being worked on. My personal guess is that we might start picking up crumbs of information next month. Since I already have a long list of personally desired features, as does practically everyone else, I suspect that the programmers will avoid giving out early descriptions to avoid loud [ ] wails of dismay and displeasure. mycrofth |
