New Registration Request?

My laptop has been running the agent fine ever since wcg started. Today it is popping up a new registration request?????? Has something changed ... is anyone else seeing this?

Should I just submit it (I think that will show up like a new device, right?) or is there some way past it?

Re: New Registration Request?

Hello dbeeler,
Even when there is an update to the software, there is no need to re-register. You just have to tell the firewall that the new software is all right. But when something goes badly wrong with the program, UD.exe tries to clear up the problem with a complete re-install. In this case, you have to check the 'existing member' box on the installation screen and sign in using your member name and password.

But you do need to give your computer a new device name. The easy way is just to add 1 to the old name. For a while, your statistics will show the old device and the new device under your name, but after 2 weeks the old device name will age off your screen unless you use the drop-down menu to show all the device names you have ever used.

The point to keep in mind is that something went wrong. Perhaps it was just a transient hardware error, but I would be suspicious. After rebooting, before I did anything else, I would check my hard disk file system for cross-linked files. I have a number of utilities to choose from. Windows has one built in. Just bring up My Computer and right click on your hard drive (probably C:). Then select Properties and click on Tools - Error Checking. You are the best judge of when to schedule your next check for malware.

Good luck. I hope you will be crunching again soon without any more problems.

Re: New Registration Request?

It seems like one of the identifying agent files may have been erased or corrupted somehow, is my guess.

I would run a virus scan to make sure you don't have anything like that to deal with. Also, you might want to do a scandisk on your hard drive to make sure the surface scan does not show any sectors going bad or something.

Otherwise, you can simply fill in the registration info as before and even leave the same device name as before.
