I will keep posting that until this is resolved the GPU project is not fit for the general grid.
----------------------------------------I will say again it renders my 1055T 4G Ram 560Ti machine into a practically useless box of junk while the GPU WU's run I will say again the very same machine running a GPUGrid WU is totally unaffected - my sig is evidence of this as none of my other crunchers are involved in GPUGrid This needs to be resolved before nvidia_hcc1 exits beta Right now off to try and position my cursor over the submit button - wish me luck Dave |

Check the Folding@home forums and you will find the same complaints, except that they have been going far longer and have far more experience on GPUs. It depends in part on how large a percentage of the GPU power the project uses, among other things.
----------------------------------------As I have posted several times, I see no problems with my Radeon HD 7770s, so it may also depend on how well the card implements OpenCL. GPUGrid uses CUDA as I recall, and so is more suitable for Nvidia anyway. Lots of luck. (PS - I Fold on two GTX 560s and a GTX 560 Ti, and they are particularly bad for desktop use then, so I banish them to dedicated PCs. Even a lowly GT 440 works better for desktop use, so it has something to do with the card also.) Finally, if you have the Aero interface available, try turning it on. It works wonders, since it adds an extra layer of buffering of some sort, but I don't like it myself and don't use it. [Edit 2 times, last edit by Jim1348 at Sep 14, 2012 2:08:30 PM] |

David,
Depending on the GPU application, they can impact the use of your computer. The kernels for HCC1 run between 0.25 - 2.0 seconds (depending on your GPU) and those are as short livid as the researchers can make them. It is the length of the kernels that impacts responsiveness of your computer while the GPU app is running. Due to this, we do not recommend that you run the GPU application while you are actively using your computer. Although we would like to say it would have no impact on your computer, the GPU application will impact some people's computer. The choice is to run it or not and we are going to choose to run the application and let the end users decided if the want to run it on their computer. thanks, Kevin |

David, using less cores to crunch CPU tasks while the GPU tasks are running might help. Try setting your preferences to use 50% of the CPU cores and see what happens.

that does not work either. I went all the way down to 1 core; same results even turning turbo boost and hyper thread off. Zip-o-la

txyankee and others. We failed to add an important setting to the website. The BOINC client will allow you to only run GPU when you are not using your computer (the same as the cpu option) we need to enable that. That will allow work to run on your GPU when you aren't actively using your computer, but stop it when you are. We will get that option up shortly.

There I wondered about these laments, and looking in my client the option says "Use GPU when computer is in use", not ticked. Always thought that if there was no info from the server, the client would assume the hardwired default, and indeed in my client the box is not selected. |
