Hi,
for the last few days, I have been unable to download any tasks from WCG on my machine. My OS is Archlinux, and everything is up-to-date (except boinc since the last version who came out a few days ago haven't hit the repository yet). To be more accurate, in the transfer tab of the BOINC Manager, all downloads are stuck at 0% with the error "Download: Retry in xx:yy:zz (project backoff: aa:bb:cc)". Since I'm currently trying to download from several projects, I don't believe the problem comes from the project. Since i'm only using BOINC on this machine, i've been able to pinpoint the problem to around september 8th, date of my last return. What i've tried so far: aborting all downloads and task and clicking on "update" on WCG in the BOINC Manager. I've tried resetting WCG, and i've tried removing and re-adding WCG on my Projects list of the BOINC Manager. Nothing have worked, but in the last 2 cases a lot of stuff got downloaded, and the downloads actually seemed to be working, though they seemed to be mostly .gif files or small files, so I assumed they were not related to any task, and were rather graphical stuff from WCG. Here are a few relevant lines from /var/lib/boinc/stdoutae.txt: 10-Sep-2012 02:12:12 [---] [http] [ID#0] Info: Connection #2 to host www.worldcommunitygrid.org left intact There are also a few SSL error: 10-Sep-2012 02:12:11 [World Community Grid] [http] [ID#3] Info: SSLv3, TLS handshake, Client hello (1): For the bravest of data cruncher here, i've uploaded a whole session of stdoutae.txt on a pastebin here. Not the whole file obviously, since it's really really huge (about 12 000 lines), just the most recent session from the daemon startup. I'm really at loss at what to do, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll also try to be as available as possible to give every details I might have forgot to give here. Thanks to anyone who might help. |

Glad I'm not the only one, I'm using Archlinux 64-bit, and your pastebin has the exact same errors as mine. Going through my own logs I roughly know the time it started (7th September, 21:05 BST). BOINC hasn't been able to download any work units since then. I don't know if this Archlinux specific either, there is another thread which seems similar.
----------------------------------------I thought it could have been a bug with a recent update in Archlinux, but nothing was updated around that time that would cause this problem, rosetta@home continues to download and crunch away as if nothing has happened. I know a week or two ago the servers had problems, I'm wondering if that problem has returned?, maybe it's only effecting users from specific regions?. I have tried different DNS's (openDNS, google, my ISP 'virginmedia'), nothing helps. I recompiled BOINC version 7.0.31, it still suffers the same problem, I suspected ca-certificates but that package hasn't been updated for a couple of months in Arch, I'm really stuck with what is wrong, the only conclusion I have reached, is that it could be server side, I hope someone can help?. Edited to add: Archlinux uses OpenSSL 1.0.1c, and it is known the have authentication issues with servers using older versions, but it has been patched and compiled with the flag '-DOPENSSL_NO_TLS1_2_CLIENT', and has worked for months before this recent problem occurred. There appears to be a known problem with Archlinux and/or a particular linux driver affecting SSL. Found the following page:

Thank you, a mobile humanist , for the update and link, that looks like the problem, thanks for letting us know :). Was this driver recently updated, around the 7th of September?, because workunits were downloading before this date, although similar errors are in my log from as far back as May, this is the first time though it has totally refused to download at all.
----------------------------------------Edit: I installed BOINC into my old Windows PC and logged in, WCG units immediately started downloading, so it 'seems' it is a 'Linux' problem, I can't be sure if it is isolated to Archlinux though. The bug ticket at kernel.org (https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45071) indicates that this appears to be a problem with the r8712u driver, apparently used for various wireless sticks/NICs. Are you using this driver? It also seems that the problem is exclusive to 64-bit linux, another common symptom reported here.
Some Googling shows reports of similar problems going back a few months. Comments on the tracker ticket indicate that the problem is intermittent, and so difficult to locate/reproduce (https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45071#c1 ), but it looks like a patch, and a request to fall back to an earlier version of the driver for the time being, was submitted today. |

Well the driver idea is probably not applicable to me : i'm using a Desktop with a direct wired connection to my box... I'll wait for a few days, and if nothing new pops up here, I'll just assume the issue comes from Archlinux, and i'll go ask there (i'll still update this thread if a solution is found though).

Like you Azriel, I'm using a wired connection, this problem is really a mystery, I can't see any packages that would have caused this problem at the date of the 7th of september, the only conclusion I could come to was that something has changed server side, and it has triggered a bug in in our installations, ca-certificates, curl and OpenSSL haven't been updated for several weeks, and things have been working in that time, although I'm thinking it's to do with those packages, I just don't know why, and without apparent cause.
My log literally fails at around 21:07 BST on the 7th, when a few minutes before a download had successfully completed. Heres a short snip from my log: http://pastebin.com/K5ZqJiKz, the time it first fails is infact 21:07, just minutes before at 21:05 the last downloads I have received to date, something happened around that time I think. |

Are you able to access HTTPS sites in general from Archlinux?
Try this: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org |

I can confirm that page opened very snappy, so no problems there, the only connectivity problems I've experienced over the last few days is downloading the work units from WCG. Like I said before there has been intermittent errors in my log of this type before, but it has always managed to reconnect and download, first time WCG has had any long term download problems that I've experienced.

Yep, works fine, loads quickly and everything... I haven't really seen any trouble in my web browsing, the only issue I seem to have is this task download thing.
