Re: GFAM on GPU?

Hello Norton01,

Theoretically, you can run as many threads as you want. Your CPU has a maximum throughput level that is sliced up among the threads. Some BOINC bug has convinced it to run an additional thread for GOFAM because you have an ATI GPU. However, the thread is running on your CPU, not your GPU. Because it takes up additional memory and cache, the additional thread probably slows down your total throughput. I cannot guess how much it slows things down. 0.1%? 0.3%? Maybe even a little more. Annoying, but not an emergency.

Re: GFAM on GPU?

Hello Norton01 and Welcome to the WCG forum.

A known CPU-only_aware GFAM-WU displayed by BOINC using text "0.40 CPUs + 1.00 ATI GPUs" formatting of the likes that I've seen thus-far only used when my Win-machine crunched a beta-HCC-GPU WU -- is indeed strange. Produced from a machine set-up that has the AMD latest-generation CPU (the FX-8150), and a middle-end model of AMD's new-generation of GPUs (the HD7850) -- can only add to the intrigue surrounding the possibility that, via OpenCL, the GPU may have been seen or confused as a CPU (also?). The WCG-Techs may shed some light about what looks like a bug (or would that be a 'feature' of an all-AMD set-up?).

Re: GFAM on GPU?

Thanks to all for the responses

Regardless of whether it's a bug or feature, the output on the rig appears to have gone up about 10% since this started occurring and without errors.

That said, I'll keep on eye on the rig and not worry about it as long as the present condition doesn't hurt the research or the rig.

Re: GFAM on GPU?

This was a bug in the server side code. We worked with Berkeley to track it down and fixed it late last week. We should not see this issue appear again.

Re: GFAM on GPU?

The rig has returned to its previous state as of this afternoon- no references to GPU's running and back to its usual 8 cores.

Thanks!
