[RESOLVED] Connecting to localhost (?!?) and no login possible

Hey everybody,

my Client seems to do nothing. Problem is, when I start the manager it says "connecting to localhost", but nothing happens. I was not asked to login before, so I clicked on "Tools" -> "attach to project or account manager", but no window or dialogue appears.

I had the BOING-Manager on my PC some months ago already, maybe he has found some old config-files and uses them now? Anyway, I don't know what to do, why can't I login to my account with the Client?

I appreciate your help,
Latio

Re: Connecting to localhost (?!?) and no login possible

Hi,

Can you first check in Task Manager [presuming Windows], show all user processes, if boinc.exe is running. That's what the BOINC manager is trying to connect to. boinc.exe is the core client that manages the tasks without which nothing works for BOINC.

Re: Connecting to localhost (?!?) and no login possible

Hi,

thanks for your quick reply. I am sorry, yes, it's Win7 64bit and I installed as a client with restricted rights.

boinccmgr.exe *32 is running, but no boing.exe

I can start boing.exe manually, but then it runs in a Dos-Window. I guess, that should be different. :-)

If you open the same Task Manager, "show all user processes" button bottom left pushed, then go to Services tab, there's a BOINC entry [there better be]. Right click on it and select start. If things are OK, it continues to run. If not, report back.

I started the BOINC-service and did several restarts, it keeps running, thats fine...but the BOINC-Manager is still trying to connect to localhost with no success.

Re: Connecting to localhost (?!?) and no login possible

Could be your security software is/started blocking access via port 31416 over localhost IP 127.0.0.1.

1) Go into the BOINC data directory, path printed in log and look for the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file. In there is a 32 character hash [random] password. Change that with notepad to something you can easily remember.
2) Restart client service in Windows Task Manager with stop and start.
3) In BOINC Manager go to the advanced menu and select computer. Type as host name 127.0.0.1 and the simple password as what you put in the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file. The manager would normally connect.

Of course, if the boinc.exe service keeps running, it would have fetched work from WCG. You can check in Task Manager, Show All User Processes and sort them on name and scroll down. If the client is crunching, there are processes listed that start with wcgxxxxxx. There's more ways to get you work progress information, but that's when you can't get the BOINC Manager GUI to connect at all.

Before that, find the original installer software, run it and choose "repair". That will reset permissions. Still no success, uninstall and install and make sure to confirm the "Protected Application Execution" and "Allow all users".

Sorry for this... 99.9% have no trouble installing and running. Your statistics page suggest that work was processed lastly some 135 days ago (April'12).

I did both, "repair" as well as deinstallation and new installation to be sure, that everything is checked as asked. Unfortunately again no success. After I changed the password, the BOINC Manager is switching between "Connecting to 127.0.0.1" and "Disconnected" within seconds.

Try another de-instal followed by instal, butttttt....change the default location the installer chooses for a brand new location never used before, don't forget to change the data location also. biggrin

Couldn't "restricted rights" cause Latio's problem?
