No problem - I am just like a monkey I have seen in one "Documentary-Feature" movie (can't recall the title): monkey looked under the stones for food and when it spotted a snake under one of them, it fell on the ground unconscious (simple reflex). After recovering, it had, of course, to check if it really saw a snake. Reflex worked again, and again, and again... :-)

Do not shoot techs, they have lot of work finding the problem and repairing servers and I am sure they will start to work on not-that-important issues as accessing the Twitter account is, as soon as they will find some spare time :-)

You will probably agree with me that ensuring the healthy servers a smooth crunching for all of us is bit more important than our small pains with Twitter :-)

The app server which initiates the communication to twitter to obtain the initial token for authorization proxies through one of our web servers to get access to the internet. However, one of the mitigations to ongoing server issues that we have been having was to consolidate all upload/download activity onto a single server. This meant that we had stopped the apache server that the app server was proxying through. As a result, the app server couldn't initiate the required communications with twitter.

I manually changed the settings so that it used to the other server that was running all the upload/download traffic. We will look at putting in some fault tolerance into that so if that happens again in the future, it won't cause an issue. If that will take too long to implement we will put in some monitoring to notify us when the service is down so that we can manually intervene.

Oh thanks for the explanation. It was just interesting to get some background to the issue since I myself am at the beginning of my IT career :)
