haemochromatosis

I have found on the forums some postings back in 2006 suggesting hemochromatosis as a possible research candidate. I have a particular family interest in this, as my brother-in-law died in 2011 from complications related to this disorder.

Although there is currently an established way of dealing with the symptoms, I am not aware there is actually a cure or even research into a possible cure that would remove the need for regular 3 monthly blood-letting procedures. This current way of treating the disorder seems very archaic.

I understand that WCG is not about suggesting projects to the scientific community, but since this is a genetic disorder maybe there is a possibility of helping with relevant research at some point, hence this posting to have it on record here at WCG that might be picked up by scientists searching the internet for ways to help with computationally intensive analysis.

The easiest way for this to happen is to find a researcher/research project interested in doing the research and have them contact WCG about hosting the project. I do not know how much tech support WCG gives but imagine it could be alot if they are so inclined. An Admin type should be able to point you to a contact for the specifics of HOW this happens.

Re: haemochromatosis

Hello dustydave,

Any nonprofit organization that could benefit from the computational power of World Community Grid and meets the criteria outlined on our website may submit a proposal. Here are the basic requirements: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/viewSubmitAProposal.do

This document describes the process: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/bg/rfp.pdf

This document is the application to be submitted: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/bg/RFPApplication.doc

If you know of an organization that is currently doing research on haemochromatosis, please feel free to forward them this information.

Thanks.

Tedi
