what happens after HCMD2 ?

is this all for a paper to come - is the data going to be further refined and brought back - is new work coming

am i right the latest work has been re-crunching previous work? i'm sure it's fine but it could bring back memories of the infamous "grid"

Re: what happens after HCMD2 ?

Allow me to presume to speak for the techs on your last assumption.

No. There is no re-crunching of previous work. They have made this abundantly clear multiple times and perpetuating this rumor only damages the public perception.

The work that is being done now is the result of an audit which checks to see that all targets were completed. The work that was missed for whatever reason (never crunched) is what is being distributed now.

Re: what happens after HCMD2 ?

Here are some (hopefully accurate) information summarizing some scientist posts sent during the last 3 years.

Because of the computation complexity, the screening has be planned to be performed in several steps.
  • HCMD1 served to realize a first screening for identifying candidates for more detailed investigation and for identifying the most appropriate docking areas.
  • Based on HCMD1 results, HCMD2 served to investigate more deeply the identified candidates.
  • The current "re-work" (since Spring 2012) served to challenge some of HCMD2-results.

Maybe, many of the members are not really aware about pharmaceutical and medical research. In all cases, what we are doing at WCG is real research life:
  • Planning
  • Investigating
  • Challenging
  • Sorting (interesting/promising vs. not/less interesting/promising)
  • Planning the next step
  • Investigating
  • Challenging
  • Sorting
  • ...

For one final pharmaceutical product, it is usually necessary to investigate recursively at least 10'000 substances. This "success rate" is also similar for agro-business products (e.g. crop protection).

Worldwide, many scientists will work a life long on problems without experiencing a concrete and full success.
In vitro and in silico (computational bio-science) researches are necessary for helping to identify "faster" the "right" product.

Pharma research and development require for a new product at least between 7 and 10 years; some products require much more.

In 2008, Raphaël Bolze wrote his PhD thesis about the HCMD project. It is a very interesting and explaining document about the work we support with HCMD.

Enjoy,
Yves

KerSamson,
it's very interesting explanation. I had just a limited idea about this complexeties. Hope that our help on grid computing really could reduce this extenses times until new products be launched.
Best regards. wink

Re: what happens after HCMD2 ?

Hi Giba,
I would formulate your hope in the other way:
WCG's support for HCMD does not especially speed-up the research, it makes such research possible.
Cheers,
Yves

What's the "infamous 'grid'"?

it was another company, long time ago. apparently they had just walked away from their project and left the members repeating old, useless work.

so the above answers are appreciated here.

smile Re: what happens after HCMD2 ?

i do appreciate all this details about HCMD2 and its a great challenge to fasten the possibility of a cure one day . As HCMD2 reach the end we all can turn to others projects directed to cure children;to hasten the cure for our offsprings
