My curiosity got the best of me the other day and I started thinking about the scope of the projects here. I know the CFSW project has a potential number of work units in the trillions so they must have a mechanism for deciding which units they want to run to get the best data - provide the best picture for themselves. However, I am curious if WCG has turned down any projects because the scope of the project was deemed too large or impractical for the present (or foreseeable future) ? Is there a potential range of years for a project ? I am not necessarily interested in specifics, but just in a general sort of answer.

Yes, WCG has turned down projects, because contract were not signed [publication of data refusal], or minimum size not met... amount of work from agreement in principle to launch versus period of computing out of balance [aside, imagine the frenzy when something runs only 3 weeks and on a proposers cluster would have finished well before even getting to launching]. Something like ACAH1 will not get on again... simply not the volume to justify the time and resources. How much that lower limit is... never hard mentioned, but I'd think 6 to 12 months is the range... something like several recent projects were initially announced to complete in.

I personally would like to see a WCG 'Lite' with some of those smaller projects, OBVIOUSLY they would have to be as plug and play as possible, meaning WCG supplies the software 'as is' and the projects must fit within it. I think a bunch of us would love to help a smaller project that has promise for results in a shorter time frame than some of the longer projects. OBVIOUSLY finding the cure for Cancer, Malaria, Clean Water, etc is VERY IMPORTANT too, but for variety I would love to crunch for a project that will finish in 2 months start to finish. Maybe it could even be WCG II and a sub website concentrating on the small projects that currently don't fit WCG's mold. ![]() ![]() |

What was ACAH1? Just curious... CJSL Gotta keep crunching... I believe it refers to African Climate at Home 1, which was a very brief project (before my time, so that's all I know...) ![]() |

What was ACAH1? Just curious... CJSL Gotta keep crunching... I believe it refers to African Climate at Home 1, which was a very brief project (before my time, so that's all I know...) You are correct - ACAH1 was indeed a very short project (which ran between 03/09/2007 and 27/06/2008), and as can be seen from the Stats page, it had a runtime of only (y:d:h:m:s) 33:020:18:29:27, from 33,028 Results. Indeed, it was such a short project, that the badge levels received a 'unique' requirement of; Bronze = 1 day, Silver = 7 days, Gold = 30 days, Ruby = 45 days, Emerald = 60 days and Sapphire = 75 days. I can't recall exactly why I didn't participate in the project (possibly bandwidth issues), although looking back in hindsight (it being the only project that I don't have a badge for), perhaps I should have... BTW, the first badge level (just a plain badge - no colour at the time), was introduced on the 15th of Jan, '08, with the first three (Bronze, Silver and Gold) being introduced after this particular project ended - on the 24th of September '08. For completeness of information, the latest three badges (Ruby, Emerald and Sapphire), were brought in 10 months later, on the 14th of July '09. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by gb009761 at Jul 21, 2012 2:16:06 PM] |
