Dear Friends, Am Facing A problem, Ur Suggestions Would Be Most Welcome.
I am using a Dual Core Xeon 5050 With HT, 2GB Ram And a 146GB SAS HDD On Win 7 (32Bit Ultimate). The WCG software Is Able To Process 4 Tasks At Once. But When I check In The Resource Monitor, I observe, That All The Processes Get Suspended For A Fraction Of A Second & Then Resume Again Even When There Are No More Tasks. I Have Observed This Even When There Is No Other Process Running On The Computer. Could This Be Due To CPU Throttling ? After Going Through The Forums I Have Already Tried 1) Changing The Profile To Maximum Performance 2) Changed The Preferences 3) Checked The CPU Temp & Found It Within Normal Working Range. Also While Investigating This Problem I Checked The Tasks Screen On BOINC, The "To completion" Indication For Every Application Keeps Stalling Sometimes Progresses Forward & Then Backward, Also What Ever Time It Says To Completion Is Totally Unreliable Because If It Says 20min & I Check It After An Hr. It Would Still Be Around 20 Or Even 21mins. This Is Very Confusing. What Could Be The Reason For It & How Can I Possibly Rectify This. Is This CPU Throttling Of Some Kind? Or Is It Due To Low RAM? Or Possibly Something Else? Thanks For Your Help In Advance. Pardon For My Style Of Writing With The First Character Caps, That's Just A Style. ![]() |

Hi,
----------------------------------------The Default CPU time use is 60% [3 seconds on, 2 seconds off, per task, which has a system cooling function, mainly for laptops]. You can change that to 100% on the Website My Grid > Device Manager > Device Profiles > Default > Custom or in the BOINC Manager local preferences. Or, the BOINC Manager Activity menu set Run Always, which does the same things. Xeons can have that. To Completion is best ignored, long as the % progress keeps incrementing, and when selecting a task and the properties button on left, the CPU time continues to go up, and the last checkpoint time keeps periodically increasing. It's the result of "non deterministic", non-linear calculations, trying to find the most optimum fold/position/docking energy for a particular point on the target... sometimes quick, sometimes slow, sometimes requiring multiple attempts. As for style, that is one step further than e.g. German, which caps a lot of words, long as you don't write whole normal words and sentences is caps... that's shouting. Dear Sir,
Thanks For Ur Reply. As Mentioned In My Post I Have Already Tried Different Profiles And Different Settings In Preferences Even Tried "0" Which Is No Restrictions. As Suggested By U I Have Now Switched To "Run Always" There Is Some Improvement, It Can Be Very Clearly Seen In The CPU Core Graphs Now The Peeks Have A Plateau & The Dips R Less Than 50%. But I Suspect It Might Be What U Say "[3 seconds on, 2 seconds off, per task, which has a system cooling function, mainly for laptops]" But Is There Any Way That It Could Be Confirmed If This Is Due 2 This Cooling Reason Or CPU Throttling ? And What Ever Be The Reason It Could Be Over Ruled. Thanks, Thanks For Understanding The Style Thing. I Did Study German For A Few Years Though, May B That Could B The Reason That I Feel Like Writing Like This ![]() |

If BOINC switches on and off you can see it in the BOINC Manager task view... the elapsed time progress stutter, and in the message log [when a log flag is set].

There are the BOINC processes that start with wcg in the name, which with Run Always would display continuous time use. CPU throttling as in your system alternating hertz... that suggests a real heat problem. For good order the "0" no restrictions is when the non-BOINC load is greater than 25% [default]. That pauses BOINC at least 10 seconds each time the condition occurs. Would also be overridden if set to "Run Always". |

Dear Sir,
There Was A Elapsed Time Stutter But Now Its More Smooth After Setting It To "Always On", How And From Where Can I Enable Logging ? As Quoted Above, As Per The Task Manager Process Tab Now After Switching To Always On The Elapsed Time Is Continuous Now, But As Quoted Earlier The Progress & To Complication Is Erratic. Now Testing With Different Settings For Memory & Swap Settings, Getting Better Results Now. Also Ordered 8GB RAM For This Computer Should Get It Within 24hrs. After That Would Add Another CPU On The Board Because The Board Supports Dual CPU. But Don't Suspect A Heat Problem Which I Have Been Monitoring With Diagnostic Tools, Also The CPU Sits Right Next To An AC. Will Check Out The Same Behavior On 2 More Computers In A Few Hrs Time And Report Back The Results. Thanks Once Again. |
