Hi,
----------------------------------------I've been running BOINC (for WCG) on about 8 machines for years, and never had any problem - but now I've got something I don't understand. One of my machines has basically just stopped processing jobs. There are 5 tasks showing as ready to run in the BOINC manager. The boincmgr is running, and has done CPU benchmarks etc - then, nothing. No errors in the logs. I'm not sure where to look next. I've looked at the FAQ, but not seen anything that describes this problem. I'm running Ubuntu (as with most of my machines). I just deleted the whole BOINC installation and reinstalled it (using the sudo apt-get process) - it seems to have installed BOINC 6.10. Still getting the same problem. Sorry - I feel like this is likely to be a 'stupid' problem or something I'm doing wrong. But the machine in question has worked for years (and for 6 months without a reboot) - but then just stopped for no obvious reason. Help please! Thanks. ![]() (previously known as 'proxima' on SETI, UD, distributed folding, FaD, and Rosetta) [Edit 2 times, last edit by alver at Jun 16, 2012 8:58:17 AM] |

When one of my computers refused to process tasks once...I found that the system clock had changed to several months earlier somehow, which didn't jive with BOINC, so it refused to work. Once I changed the system clock back to the actual date/time, then presto! everything was back to normal. Just a shot in the dark...but figured I'd mention it.

15-Jun-2012 16:38:10 [World Community Grid] Scheduler request completed: got 1 new tasks 15-Jun-2012 16:38:11 [---] Suspending file transfers - time of day 15-Jun-2012 16:38:29 [World Community Grid] Scheduler request completed: got 5 new tasks Your new install has received 6 new tasks from the server, but can't process them because it hasn't downloaded the needed files due to the time of day network restriction. You can remove the restriction to see if the needed files download and the tasks start processing or wait for the time of day restriction to expire and the client should download the files and start processing. |

Thanks for your help, all. A combination of those things worked! I got ntp set up to get the time accurate (it was way out) - I then forced an update to the server which downloaded some files, but still didn't start. However, when my comms window started at midnight, it downloaded some *more* files, and immediately started processing.
----------------------------------------So it was some combination of those problems - and it's up again now. Thanks again, everyone. Goes to show how stable BOINC normally is - I have 30-something years of CPU time contributed, and don't even know how to fix a basic problem like this when it arises, because it hardly ever does... Cheers. ![]() (previously known as 'proxima' on SETI, UD, distributed folding, FaD, and Rosetta) |

The 15th was right per your log... BOINC does not care about time so much, a whole lot more about date. If your system were on the 15th when fetching new work, then the date set back 9 days or more, the client would think it could not make the deadline, switch to high priority processing, or tell to abort the tasks as they have expired.
----------------------------------------It was BobCat13 putting the finger on the pain... results half downloaded. Long as new work units in the Tasks view of BOINC Manager do *not* show "Ready to Start" in the status column, they wont execute. Your original message said "There are 5 tasks showing as ready to run in the BOINC manager", which was more than puzzling, but the log suggested differently. One confusing thing about scheduled networking is, when hitting the update button, that the client will connect to the server scheduler and exchange information, but wont actually up/download. Looks like you got tasks at a glance, but closer inspection will have said "downloading/uploading". It will though show newly assigned tasks, albeit held in their download track. To kick start a client [temporarily eliminate obstructions] is visiting Activity menu of BOINC Manager and set "Run always" and "Network always available". This allows to complete most of the scheduling activity that may have been rudely interrupted. Glad it got fixed. Plz edit OP title and insert [RESOLVED] like this post and we can forget, or the next one might see help in this thread.
