Transit of Venus (5th June 2012)

Hi here's the first snap of Venus closing in on the Sun's disk

http://soho.nascom.nasa.gov/data/realtime/c2/512/

It should be visible as it crosses the path between the Sun and us here

http://sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov/data/SDO_Self_Updating_6.htm

which as is always the case with Murphy's Law the Solar Dynamics Observatory Satellite has had a little exposure setting problem overnight biggrin Either that or we are all going to get a good Sun Tan today !!!

Venus is about 95% the diameter of Earth and about 72% the distance from the Sun that we are on our travels.

Ground base timings and more info see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transit_of_Venus,_2012

btw if you miss this you won't get another chance to see it until 10 December 2117

Make it a great day

Dave

Re: Transit of Venus (5th June 2012)

The SDO folks have a dedicated site for the transit at http://venustransit.gsfc.nasa.gov/ You can presently determine your location (based off your ISP I presume) and see the track of the transit from your view. I'll only see about the first third here, that is if the rain ends and the clouds clear.h

Venus has gone behind the occluding disk on the SOHO Satellite

http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/data/realtime-images.html

See the change since this morning on the LASCO C2 image

Nice Comets on C3 to brighten up an evening (in the UK)

The SDO images have been edited to eliminate the over exposed section

Cool biggrin

Re: Transit of Venus (5th June 2012)

I might be mistaken but I think you can just see Venus in one frame of this video

http://sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov/data/aiahmi/latest.php?t=aia_0193&r=512

Around the 10 o'clock position (on one of those old style clocks biggrin)

Still in the corona

Right I'm off to get some shut eye

This will all be over by the time I wake up. Looking at the Storm blowing through I doubt we will see the Sun at all tomorrow transit or no transit biggrin

Night Folks

Re: Transit of Venus (5th June 2012)

No problem Sue

This web page is awesome right this minute

http://sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov/data/SDO_Self_Updating_6.htm

At least we can still get to see it above the clouds thanks to the vision of the SDO team

As the SDO images won't be around forever I've created this for posterity

Enjoy :-)
