The Costs of Crunching

Suprise! It is going to cost you more to crunch. A recent poll of 500 Utility Executives say they need more money from you. Maybe a lot more. Wind is bad but "clean" coal is good ... electric cars "eat up" 7% of supply. sad

Re: The Costs of Crunching

Even more reason to crunch CEP2 then - as that way, we'll be able to beat them at their own game and install Solar Panels biggrin

Re: The Costs of Crunching

Ah ha someone else finally wakes up to our future reality (very much here today in the UK)

Been running the "Not sure how much longer they will be a...crunching in the UK" thread for quite a while now wink

Don't worry it will be "Coming to a Country near you from Friday" if we don't do something about it.

Currently paying about twice as much per KWh for Electricity as someone in the USA

Yours "A Guinea Pig"

Dave

p.s. as a result my crunchers have to be some of the greenest on the grid - the jury is still out though on the FX-8150. See link in my sig

Re: The Costs of Crunching

Hello biggrin

I'm new to WCG and looking forward to doing my share to help humankind.

I wonder if it's more cost efficient to crunch with a laptop? Any thoughts out there about that?

I use an E7500 tower with Intel's G41 Express Chipset. I average $44 (US Currency) for a month's hydro if I run my tower 24/7. If I don't use my tower for BOINC projects, my billing drops to around $37/month.

Cheers

Re: The Costs of Crunching

For equivalent processors I think it is more efficient to use the laptop because the laptop versions of the cpu are usually more power efficient to get the most out of a battery charge. However, laptops may have heating issues if run wide open. Quite a number of people will run their laptops at a reduced rate due to this issue.

Cheers

Re: The Costs of Crunching

The E and L series xeons are a bit better on electric consumption than the X series. Intel charges a premium for L series though. Looking at the latest processors just released, they look more energy efficient. Looking at moviemans thread on his dual 8 core PC, his power consumption is less compared to his dual hex system. But those processors aren't cheap. Guess its how much your willing to donate for a worthy cause. I'll do it for as long as I can afford to.
