right now 3 of the projects have just been speed up by more than 50%... so yea there is a good reason they have as many projects as they do .... we will not know what is necessarily in the future but with this many projects running we can hopefully get science done faster. AND encourage MORE people to join us!! I would LOVE to see Boinc installed BY DEFAULT on ALL new pc's, with an opt out option of course!! I would like to see it come up with a short description and then ask if it is okay to install it. Maybe have WCG be the default project and let the user then chose which sub-project to crunch for. ![]() ![]() |

I think WCG Admins should require more communication from scientists
----------------------------------------For now there are some projects that loaded a bunch of work into GRID and think that's all. More communication will keep crunchers crunching, and will attract new people ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by rilian at Jun 10, 2012 6:44:50 AM] |

More communication will keep crunchers crunching, and will attract new people I'm in total agreement with you here rilian - there are some projects where it's a rare day when they don't post a comment or two/answer a question or two, whilst there are others where we don't hear from the scientists for months on end (even for newly released projects where just a simple acknowledgement of what we're all contributing would be nice and encouraging). AFter all, it doesn't take that long to post a comment - I'm certainly not looking for a new chapter of "War and peace", just a few words here and there to let us know that they're still around... Personally, I'd make it a requirement of onboarding a project - communication at least once every 3 months for active/intermittent projects (that's not asking a lot), and for sciences that have completed, once a year until all the results have been published/fully completed at the scientists end of things (which, of course, could include the scenario where the finances have come to an end). ![]() |

WOW you are VERY generous with your time frames!! I would saw AT LEAST once per week while the workunits are flowing and then once a month until they and WCG are done with that project. Each Project could have its own thread locked so we users could read but not post to it, giving the scientists a place to drop a quick note without fear of us critiquing what they say or how things are going. Of course all the user comments would still be in the 'public areas' like they are now. ONE project is doing OVER 200k per week in workunit flow, while most are down in the 10 to 99k per week average. A short note saying all is going as planned would be encouraging, no news is NOT always good news! ![]() ![]() |

Yes mikey159b, I'd certainly like it to be a lot more frequent than a minimum of one comment every three months - although I didn't want anyone coming back with the argument that they're "too busy"... (no one is too busy to boot up a computer, log onto the Internet, launch a browser, log onto the forum and post a brief comment once every three months - after all, how long does that take in total?, 15 minutes at max?).
----------------------------------------What the scientists have to remember (and there are a few who do), is that they're basically getting all this crunching power for free - it's us, the crunchers, who are contributing our own machines for the cause. So, a little interaction certainly wouldn't go amiss. ![]() |

The WCG team has monthly [tele/vid] conferences with the research teams of active and coming projects, which is probably a source of the problem. To add, there's the linguistic issue being served [a poor excuse in my book... how do these guys maintain their "up-to-speed" with global science if they can't read the lit.], to which I've made a proposal how to get around that [Informal translations if need be from volunteers... how many fluent bi-lingual are there for Japanese-English / Chinese-English, Portuguese English, let alone Spanish-English, with 1/3rd the US now pretty much of Hispanic origin]... and there being the new WCG team lead with a Spanish name ... something gotta come out of that ;>)

Just a reminder to members that many of the science teams update their own websites more often than the WCG forum. These can easily be found by clicking on the "Research" tab on the home page.
----------------------------------------That said, I too wish they would update their WCG forums more frequently. Perhaps WCG could remind them in their monthly meeting with the science teams. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Dataman at Jun 10, 2012 9:29:35 PM] |

I think we have already too many projects, and WCG should stop adding projects for now and have a max fixed number of projects running, because the more we disperse the the crunching the less effective & efficient the projects will be. A queue of awaiting projects to be run would be nice and how much of short medium long term the WCG can run; in short projects policy, if the WCG doesn't have 1 already. I count 12 active projects, I think the number is enough. I enjoy and celebrate new and interesting projects joining the WCG to solve Humanity problems because we're doing what politicians and Govs. should and fail to do so, but we need the projects to give fruit, to have and maintain certain processing power so we can measure how effective a given project is and how efficient the WCG is. So, control and admin policy over the The WCG resources. Maybe would be a good idea to have a board for the only purpose to inform the Teraflops in days, etc much like each active project has in their own boards, also a thread with the WCG resource policy and how is distributed and a suggestion box for admin. related users can volunteer ideas for better admin. Of course if this already exist, for get this thread. The problem is as your mom said when you were little 'no two people are alike'. Meaning what piques your interest may not even register for me, so the more projects the more people get interested and the more people crunch. The more people crunch the more data is gathered and the more 'answers' get found! u said what i wanted to .. :) |

And in addition to the fact that 3 projects are ending soon, i believe the number of crunchers is increasing by the time...
