Hi again,
----------------------------------------I used apt-get update and then apt-get install. In Synaptic, it tells me that the boinc-manager and boinc-client are both version 7.0.27+dfsg-3~precise1~ppa1 Reload in synaptic makes no changes, origin lets me select the LP-PPA-pkg-boinc-testing/precise repository, instead of ALL, but makes no other difference. The error remains the same as described before, and after approx 60 seconds delay I get the message in "Notices" that there has been a permanent HTTP error. The strange thing is that in boinc manager, I can't find any evidence of what version it is running, but since I removed all the earlier stuff with apt-get remove, or with Synaptic "Mark for Complete Removal", I have to assume that boinc manager is running the most recently installed version. As a bit of background information, I fell out with plain Ubuntu 12.04 because it did not run Unity 3D on my video card. I'm limited to an AGP card, on an oldish machine, so I bought a more recent card off eBay and Unity 3D would run, just, but with scrolling issues. Boinc worked for me in precise prior to that, but I didn't specifically test it after the hardware change before I formatted the system drive and installed Lubuntu. Home is on a separate partition dating back to Hardy or so, and still full of Lucid stuff. I don't see how the video card could be upsetting things, but it is an untested hardware setup. The error says: "An error has occurred; check the Event Log for details" but I don't recognise the "Event Log", other than the xsession log, and I don't know where else to look. Can anyone give me a clue on that? Thanks, Ian [Edit 1 times, last edit by Momist at May 17, 2012 9:40:23 AM] |

OK, so that's progressed to 7.0.27 having installed.
The http error could be e.g. proxy related. When printed in the event/message log, maybe if you could post that from the stdoutdae.txt or stderrdae.txt file, including the before and after. The files under xUbuntu's would be in /var/lib/boinc-client. --//-- |

Hi SekeRob, I'm so glad you're still there :)
Before and after what? Currently, stderdae.txt has: . . . (hundreds of lines showing) No protocol specified No protocol specified dir_open: Could not open directory 'slots'. dir_open: Could not open directory 'slots'. dir_open: Could not open directory 'locale'. dir_open: Could not open directory 'locale'. . . . stdoutdae.txt: 16-May-2012 17:29:27 [---] Starting BOINC client version 7.0.27 for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu This has stuff from yesterday and today, and shows the HTTP error but little else that I can see. Hi,
Before and after ... the errors. Many post just the error message, where what's leading up to it and what follows in knock on if left off. Seeing a signal 15, and a too busy CPU (at least 25% is used for something), so BOINC is continually paused. "suspend work if non-BOINC CPU load exceeds 25 %" Whilst there is no work yet, set via the Activity menu the option to "Run always". Later you can tune this 25%. WCG default is actually 50%. Has Lubuntu a default "on" firewall? Ports 443 and 31416 need to be passed and IP 127.0.0.1 localhost need free passage. The HTTP error requires more log flag settings so we can see what makes the connection fall over. This is a link to the alternate manual http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?language=1&view=91 as Berkeley has been offline for the best part of 48 hours (bad as that stops BOINC installer downloading too, verified it as down too). How many frustrated volunteers give up? WCG at least offers their own hosting, but only of supported versions and xNix distros fortunately have their own repositories. What to add to cc_config.xml of /etc/boinc-client in the <log_flags> section of the file. <http_debug>1</http_debug> <http_xfer_debug>1</http_xfer_debug> <proxy_debug>1</proxy_debug> Do this with sudo else you cant save and BOINC wont take. Then read in the edited edited file via the advanced menu of BOINC manager or stop start daemon with sudo service boinc-client stop and then start. Not liking those slot/locale access problem messages. Hope those are timestamped from before the version 7.0.27 install (if there are timestamps). Let us know. --//-- |

Not sure what's going on here. I tried to check or open ports using the instructions I found here:
http://ubuntublog.org/linux-firewall-ports-iptables.htm but the commands don't work for me. I've never met a Linux version before where grep is not recognised! I'm beginning to wonder if Lubuntu is the wrong flavour for me to use after all. I'm very tempted at this stage to go back to Lucid 10.04, I made an image of my system before the clean install of 12.04 where my problems all started from. Now I've opened boinc manager to set the preferences to 100% cpu, and the manager now complains that it has closed unexpectedly several times in the last two minutes. I no longer get the dialogue asking me to connect to a project, and if I try to raise one from the menu, it dies again. I'm going to give up with this, and wait for another day when I have the time to waste, or I have made the decision to go back to Ubuntu 10.04 which I know works fine on this hardware. Another option is to wait for the new Mint to be released any time soon, and see if that suits me better. Sorry to have been a pest with this, I'm not an expert with Linux, and feel too old to learn these new tricks. I always wanted a system that "just works" and my pet hate is things that don't work. Usually I can fix them, but this is being too elusive, and I feel I have too little skill in this field to fix this one, so I give up. Thanks for the help you have offered, SekeRob. You seem to have the patience of a saint. Ian |

Is this a native OS installation? Just asking because i recently installed Lubuntu on a virtual machine and didn't configure the VM network correctly. Lubuntu told me a network connection was established, but i couldn't access websites with a browser. Setting the (Oracle) VM to bridged networking resolved this issue.
Does Boinc Manager say "connected to localhost" at the bottom of the window? |

@herna,
I think you're onto something there. Boinc manager says "connecting to localhost". And later, disconnected. By 'native' I assume you mean the OS on the sytem, not running under some other system. Yes. The only system on the PC. I'm just back from a beer festival, and finding it difficult to type, with many corrections. Bye, and thanks. |

In addition to Lubuntu, another alternative to Unity is Xubuntu. I am having no problem running BOINC under Xubuntu 12.04 (and "grep" works fine).

I had some difficulties on Linux systems when Boinc (service) continued to run the applications after i closed the manager. First thing is, enable the exit dialog - this is propably where you can change proxy settings ("options"), depending on the version. Then, each time you close the manager, check "stop running applications" in that exit dialog.
Another reason for this might be that there are now more than one Boinc services installed. Then you might to remove that second one. (Had this one too, and at this point i decided to re-install ubuntu). Because of this, i only install Boinc via the command line for Linux systems. And well, i tried Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu and Mint. The troubles were every time the same. Lubuntu looks like the most light-weight to me though. Good luck. |

16-May-2012 17:30:48 [---] Contacting account manager at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ 16-May-2012 17:30:51 [http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/] Message from account manager: permanent HTTP error www.worldcommunitygrid.org is a project, not an account manager such as BAM or GridRepublic. You need to detach/disconnect from the account manager in BOINC Manager since WCG won't send the correct info needed by the account manager function. As for the Manager saying "connecting to client" and then "disconnected", I too use Lubuntu and the only way I can get the Manager to connect to the client is to use the Advanced, Select Computer box and enter 127.0.1.1 as the Host name and the password located in /etc/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg |
