BOINC crash due to 'No close tag' in WCG scheduler reply

For the third time in 3 weeks a BOINC client crashed due to a bad reply from WCG to a client request.
This happened never before. It looks like that this is introduced with the new server software.

I reported this to the BOINC developers the first time it occurs

23-Apr-2012 14:38:19 [World Community Grid] Requesting new tasks for CPU and NVIDIA
23-Apr-2012 14:38:24 [World Community Grid] No close tag in scheduler reply
BOINC crash

Report: Client crash after "No close tag in scheduler reply"

Today the third time:
14-May-2012 10:29:32 [World Community Grid] Reporting 1 completed tasks, not requesting new tasks
14-May-2012 10:29:36 [World Community Grid] No close tag in scheduler reply
14-May-2012 11:00:30 [---] Starting BOINC client version 6.12.34 for windows_x86_64

Starting BOINC Manager makes the client restart.
The last view lines of the reply:

</project_files>

</scheduler_reply>
Content-type: text/plain

Meanwhile this problem should be solved in BOINC client version 7.0.27, but almost all WCG participants are using older or even ancient clients.

Thanks for reporting that, CP. Have forwarding this on to the techs blackboard, with emphasis.

Hope there was also a feedback loop started from developers to WCG on this possibly server 700 related issue.

I'm in discussions with David on this one. There is a line that I can remove that eliminates the trailing 'Content-type: text/plain' line but I waiting to here back from him since the in-line comments indicates that the line is required.

[edit] Actually, I've gone ahead and updated production to remove that line. I didn't find any issues testing the change and it will fix this issue for you. Please let me know if this resolve the issue for you.

Hello Kevin,

Adding: the 3 crashes were on different systems (1 BOINC 7.0.25 and 2 BOINC 6.12.34)

Can you confirm that that trailing wasn't there in the former server software?

The strange thing for me is: why is BOINC crashing 'only' 3 times in 3 weeks because of that, where I received thousands sched_replies from WCG on several machines.
Therefore it will be hard to say the problem is resolved.
I will keep running client versions sometimes crashing because of 'No close tag' and not upgrade to 7.0.27 on my machines (-1) for several weeks.

Re: BOINC crash due to 'No close tag' in WCG scheduler reply

Hello Kevin,

This morning I had a BOINC client (v6.12.34) crash again. The last line in the stdoutdae.txt:

14-Jun-2012 07:21:36 [World Community Grid] No close tag in scheduler reply

The end of sched_reply_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml:

<file_ref>
<file_name>hcc1_05_v01.gif</file_name>
<open_name>slideshow_hcc1_05</open_name>
</file_ref>
<file_ref>
<file_name>hcc1_06_v01.gif</file_name>
<open_name>slideshow_hcc1_06</open_name>
</file_ref>
<file_ref>
<file_name>hfcc_00

confused

Edit: On a second machine (also 6.12.34) it happened too:

14-Jun-2012 08:45:00 [World Community Grid] No close tag in scheduler reply

In this case BOINC restarted (because boincmgr was running, I suppose)
After the restart all WCG png's and gif's were re-downloaded.

Edit2: Also a third machine suffered of the crashed BOINC-application due to this close tag error.

After manual BOINC restart I noticed before the download of all png's and gif's:

World Community Grid 14-jun 16:11:17 [error] project file refers to non-existent

I never had this experience before WCG's server update and also never with other BOINC-projects.
