Memory/Memory Mapping in Win7 64-bit [RESOLVED]

This does not seem to fit in any of our support catagories so I will put it here.

I’m stumped. During the last HCC GPU beta, DM03 (which has two of my best cards) started having storage violations. At the time the CPU's were idle. On the BOINC side it showed an unhandled exception; storage violation and shows the address space. On the win7 side it showed that Explorer stopped running and it auto-recovered showing a message of an attempted write to a non-paged area. The machine has 12 gig of memory and NEVER pages.
I removed all 6 sticks and replaced it with 6 sticks of known-good memory. Then it would not boot at all and got various different BSOD’s for memory/hardware. I tested all 6 of the original sticks and all tested good. I also tested the HD with no errors. I put the original ones back in one at a time and it finally booted although it forced me through Startup Recovery (which seldom works for me). Now it reports 12 gig of memory installed but only 7.99 usable. It seems to be working now as I have successfully completed several wu’s on it at GPUGrid. Any idea’s why it can’t map all 12 gig?

Re: Memory/Memory Mapping in Win7 64-bit

The simplest thing to check is if Windows thinks it's been told to not use all the memory. Start MSCONFIG, go to the boot tab, click on advanced and there is an option for maximum memory usage. Make sure it is not checked. (This would not explain the complete failure to boot that you saw.)

Other culprits - less likely - are the memory settings in BIOS. Verify that the memory bus speed matches the rating of the memory (e.g. 1333 for DDR3-1333) and that the voltage is also correct. The correct voltage should be on a sticker on the memory sticks. Occasionally, you may have to run the memory at slightly higher than rated voltage -- but this is definitely not recommended.

Ensure that there's no dust in the memory sockets, no physical damage, etc.

If the memory is not all the same type, that can cause problems for some motherboards. If possible use 6 identical sticks in the system.

Not checked and no changes made since it failed while running

Matches. Default BIOS settings except for boot order. EVGA SLI-3 MoBo

Nothing noticable.

It is all identical Corsair DDR3 1333.

Just curious, what is the model number?

Re: Memory/Memory Mapping in Win7 64-bit

Have you tried only putting x amount of sticks in at a time to see if MAYBE a channel is "fryed", broken, etc.

Dataman, sure you know more than I do on these topics, but is there a possibility that one of the channels doesn't work anymore?

Re: Memory/Memory Mapping in Win7 64-bit

Thanks 5pot. Yes, what I normally do with memory problems is put in 1 stick and boot it until I get a clean boot (shut down not restart). Then I put in the second stick and boot again. Then I add them a pair at a time. Unfortunately I did not notice until the end that it was missing 4 gig.
It is now blowing up GPU wu's at GPUGrid so I took it down and put it on MW. It is blowing them up too. Same symptoms. Explorer stops and recovers. Unfortunately the wu does not successfully restart. The two GTX570 are only a month old. But as GPU_0 and GPU_1 are both having errors I doubt if it is the card(s)
I'm going to test the card memory with OCCT. Unfortunately for me, "she who must be obeyed" has other plans for me this evening. laughing

Sounds like a bad motherboard. Do you have the latest bios? Have you contacted EVGA about the problem? Never owned one but I have super micro boards which has a approved list of memory vendors. Does EVGA have a list and if so, using approved ones?

Re: Memory/Memory Mapping in Win7 64-bit [RESOLVED]

Good morning folks! First, thanks for all the attempts to help. I appreciate it!
I tested the cards and no problems found. I tested the mobo with the diag. program from the EVGA install CD and no problems found. Since I couldn’t find ANY hardware problems of even a minor nature, I ran Windows Repair from the install CD out of sheer frustration. It clunked away for 10 minutes and when it came back up I had 12 gig of usable RAM and it is now successfully crunching GPU again at MW since 03:00 this morning.
My “official” resolution is:
1. I don’t know what broke it.
2. I don’t know what was broken.
3. I don’t know what it fixed.
Nonetheless, since all is working again I will mark it resolved and chalk it up to a rare neutrino strike that changed a 1 to a 0 or something. wink Thanks again.
