Back to top, quoting techs: "Please let us know if you encounter *any* strange behaviors with this Beta within the Beta Support Forum." Common sense prevails. ... The term "common sense" is seldom found, if ever, in technical or scientific communications or literature. The use of this term promotes ambiguity rather than precision. Science and technical matters prefer well-defined and clearly-defined references -- that are specific and explicitly declared.; |

Some will not think is precise enough if specified to the 16 decimal and jump around all 4 corners of the triangle positing it's wrong and therefor the rest must be too. Try "reality". If you've not been able to break it with normal use and the occasional one does when doing abnormal stuff that does not happen but in 1 : 100,000, then it's good to go.
Waiting on item 19) of what the program asked for [it's not that hard]... what is what happens to the user that causes failure above the event horizon, not the "whilst I was rendering in HD, and Skypeing with me mom for an hour, simultaneously listening to streaming music in the background and applying that big SP2 update, that said up front to close all apps before doing so, of course continuing to browse the WCG forums, tweaking my BOINC settings AND of course burning a DVD on the go (after all they told you the computer is multitasking, so why would you not?) --//-- |

BTW, andzgrid, the world has revolved *about* 17 times around it's axis since I posted that comment... we have not got that much time for mulling things over, again ;>)
Moving on. --//-- |

BTW, andzgrid, the world has revolved *about* 17 times around it's axis since I posted that comment... we have not got that much time for mulling things over, again ;>) Those who do not learn from the past is likely to repeat it in the future. I was there just to bring up the rear so we all can move forward on that road well lit by the flame of wisdom born from past fumbles.Moving on. Moving on, indeed, for I'm happy that the latest rounds of beta-tests were well predicated with specific contexts leaving little room for doubt as to what exactly is expected to be accomplished by those beta-tests. If you will notice, the responses from crunchers were also more focused and attuned to the declared specific objectives. Everyone wins, and that's definitely a cause for all to be moving on. ; |

Few days ago KWSN_Shubbery mentioned your Jedi mind or Jedi voice... something like that. If you were Luke surely it's sky-scraping the barrel. Got an actual checkpoint to add to the list... that what the OP asked to add?...It's for when the next time "Please let us know if you encounter *any* strange behaviors with this Beta within the Beta Support Forum." such as the antivirus issue that no one was looking for [when you were quick to declare a mission accomplished]. New / altered code can have numerous impacts coming out of left field.

For those who don't want to use their machine as a test platform, or, more specifically, those who want to gobble up all the beta tasks they can, but never give any input on how they ran.... please go elsewhere. Surely the greater number of users signing up to participate in the Beta program will mean there is a potential for a greater variety of hardware/software platforms for the Beta wu's to encounter and any potential problems discovered and rectified before the Project goes live. Aaron, I think you said it best with the middle part of your post: Beta tests have a purpose BESIDES letting you brag about another badge in the forums, they are to debug apps prior to sending them to the mass public I agree that any extra input on unusual behaviour/activity that won't be reported with the returned wu is extremely useful for the Techs. I can appreciate it can be frustrating when a Beta test is announced and you don't get any wus. However, I don't think we should be lambasting anyone who has signed up to the Beta program if they don't post in these forums, because the work they are doing is still useful....surely the staff @ WCG wouldn't have introduced the Beta badge if they weren't after a greater level of participation |

Aaron, I think you said it best with the middle part of your post: Beta tests have a purpose BESIDES letting you brag about another badge in the forums, they are to debug apps prior to sending them to the mass public Very true, the goal of any Beta should be to get things running smoothly before the general release. That the time used goes towards a badge is just a nice bonus (a legitimate bonus however as time spent crunching a Beta is time away from actual live projects) However, I don't think we should be lambasting anyone who has signed up to the Beta program if they don't post in these forums, because the work they are doing is still useful....surely the staff @ WCG wouldn't have introduced the Beta badge if they weren't after a greater level of participation A very valid point. Not being overly computer savvy, (I leave that to Mrs L & the middle son... ) when reading the forums I often don't understand just what is being asked for the testers to check. My concern over that though is tempered with the knowledge that the 100+ Beta units that have run through my systems over the years are giving the techs the information that they need. Even if that information is nothing more than confirming that everything is running smoothly on at least my particular platforms. Add to all of that the fact that a lot of times I don't know that a Beta has come in, been crunched, & has been returned (my cache settings are for roughly 12 hours so units come & go quickly all the time) until a day or two later when I notice on my grid overview that the total Beta time has gone up slightly. So unless told specifically otherwise, I"m going to run on the assumption that a completed Beta (or even a system aborted one) gives the techs the info that they need (along with whatever system files that they download). If something more specific is needed then a specific request needs to be made in a way that someone who receives the Betas but doesn't read the forums several times a day gets the information too. My 2% of a $ (edit: screwed up quote tags....sigh) [Edit 2 times, last edit by Greg L at Sep 13, 2012 2:32:14 PM] |
